Hi Ross,

It is great of Andrew to give you the weekly tutorial. Actions speak louder
than words so on behalf of the SD community thanks Andrew.

I was in a similar predicament to you in 1995 facing the biggest
educational challenge of my life having despite a Computer Science degree
under my belt. I had taught Prolog to Year 12s until then and suddenly it
was removed as an acceptable language. So I was faced with the challenge and
requirement of trying to learn and teach the buggy Visual Dbase 5.5 ( the
entry level Dbase of the time ) , as a non-imperative programming language -
a solution implementation that wasn't really understood by a large section,
if not almost all of the of the then SD teaching community - with no
reliable books, tutorials, courses, teachers or even people to ask for help
leave alone an online community of support or a weekly tutorial by an
experienced colleague. At the time, I would have gladly driven 7 hours to
Mildura for a weekly tutorial for 3 months except there was no one out there
or anywhere else to help.

When I screamed there was no one to hear my voice.

In addition it was the era of the CATs ( Common Assessment Tasks ) where
your students' work were subject to collection and marks susceptible to
reduction - yes your A+ scores could be and were downgraded to D and E
scores. Furthermore, the teacher designed task was at risk of "failing" by a
declaration ( by "assessors" ) that it did not meet the requirements of the
assessment criteria. It was a harrowing time. So what did most teachers do ?
They copied each others' tasks so they wouldn't be deemed failures.

Not wanting to fail or copy anyone else's task, I kept trying and trying
and trying and trying until I spiralled downwards into depression. I was off
work for 2 weeks and slowly recovered to adopt a new attitude of not being
too hard on myself.

The following year, after recovering a little more, with no mandate, no
authority, I created Edulists in the hope that if I can prevent even one
person from suffering what I went through, the effort would be worthwhile.

The rest is history , but more importantly, don't be too hard on yourself,
use the help before things get out of hand and if you feel things are not
quite right, scream as much as you need to for your own health and the
welfare of your family. In the end, your survival is more important than
getting every detail of the Study Design perfectly delivered.

Best Wishes
