In the 80's I was a VAX herder, and for a while we had the use of a 
Fujitsu Eagle 450Mb drive like this one:

had footprint about the same as a modest top loading washing machine.

It took ages to spin up, and used to shake when the heads moved (most 
of the time really) It was a temporary replacement for a conventional 
600Mb 5.25" full height drive that cost us about $5000, which I 
thought was a bargain.

Now I wear 1Gb around my neck - it cost about $30. However, I would 
not trust it run non-stop for months on end like the Eagle.
