[Year 12 IT Apps] itapps Digest, Vol 129, Issue 29

Hi Nora

I'd also make the suggestion that if your skills aren't great with Dreamweaver, you may choose to go down a HTML/CSS/JS/jQuery line using Codecademy to learn the skills yourself. All you need to write the scripts is a program like Notepad++ which assists with the html/css tags and syntax of the programs and any current internet browser to test.

Depends on your cohort of students and technology available. I'm only down the road at MacKillop so feel free to make contact off-list if you wish and we can have a chat about your plans for next year.

Also worth noting there is a DLTV PD coming up on the 27th of November regarding the implementation of the new study. On the day, they will also be launching the VCE Resource Kit which will contain resources for teachers to use in the new study. DLTV also ran several implementation sessions this year via online means that have been recorded and I believe if you make contact with them they can direct you as to how to access the recorded sessions which (I hope) were informative for teachers and allowed teachers to ask questions about the new study.

Hi Nora
vceit.com is a great resource for teaching any VCE Computing subject. Lots of powerpoint presentations that can be delivered as is or with some minor tweaks to match your sense of humour.

>> Learning Microsoft Access most easily can be done through gcflearnfree.org which has free resources to learn different versions of Microsoft products which can be helpful for the teacher and student alike.
>> In terms of web design, this is a very big area. I'd concentrate on understanding HTML5 and CSS and how they link together. There are lots of resources online in this area, and I think you have to search these terms and find a course or web tutorial that works for you (and your students). I can suggest ones that have worked for me but they may not be relevant for your context.

Year 10 is another matter. Finding resources depends totally on the content that you have to teach given it's most likely going to be an elective subject.

I would suggest if you are doing a multimedia subject you're most likely to be using an Adobe product. If so then you would be very wise to get involved in learning on the Adobe Education Exchange.

This would really help you with relation to understanding how you can structure your teaching of Adobe Dreamweaver for Year 10s as well as up into VCE subjects.

So many resources it can look overwhelming but I think much of the training is free unlike other providers http://edex.adobe.com/professional-development/

The only proviso is that the training may be on a different software version to the one implemented at your school.

If you are running an IT subject that's in a different topic area, I suggest using the Year 7-10 (rather than Year 12) edulists and explicitly mention the topic that you wish to teach, and seeing what the educators around the traps are currently doing.

Hope that helps
Lucas

Hi Nora,
Have a look at Lynda.com. They have tonnes of video-based courses that I have found really useful in the past. They have a really great course on data visualisation which is quite prominent in the unit 1 & 2 study design. It is subscription-based?around $40 a month, I think. You can usually get a trial subscription to see if you think it might work for you.
Otherwise I've seen lots of MOOCs that might be worth considering. They are not usually software-based, but cover high-level topics really well. Try Coursera, edX, or Future Learn.
Cheers Tracey

Hi all
I'd like to see if anyone out there able to suggest courses/Pds/seminars etc to strengthen my skills. I will be teaching in 2016 IT unit 1 &2 Computing both yr
10 and yr 11 classes under the new study design. I need to get more familiar with web design using Dreamweaver, coding for web design and database such as Access.
Anticipating your rely,

It looks at a different approach to tech PD - teacher task centred

Maybe you can use the concepts contained therein
