Hi Everyone,

My student emailed me the below question and while I have put my take on it for him, I would love some ideas from staff.

I said the answer would be: interest based because it is a professional work-based community for the kids, however for the parents it is only interest based. The only thing is interest based to me says it is less formal and a school based online community would be professional.

Thanks,

Hey Ms, I am just in the process of marking a practice exam, but I am not entirely sure
about the suggested response for Q2c). I have listed details below. (Exam is TSSM 2011).

The case study is:
Question 2
The principal of Traralgon Grammar wishes to find a way of passing on information to the
parents, providing an explanation of key events that have occurred and events that will occur in
the near future.

The question is:
Explain what an online community is and the type of online community that this would be
part of.

The suggested response is:
This would be considered an interest based online community as the
audience are parents who have an interest in the happenings of the school community (1
mark)

I would have thought that it would be a professional/work-based community but it seems I would have been wrong.
I am not so sure about that though because it's not like it is a hobby or anything because it's going to be part of a school
website, so in many respects it is professional-based.

My response was:
An online community is a group of people that collaborate or meet online at a designated place
for a specific intended purpose. This would be a 'professional/work-based community' as it does
not have the intention or purpose to socialise nor is it a hobby or interest-based. It is also for an
educational institute which would generally indicate it is for professional purposes.

What is your take on it?
