Acquiring data ABOUT the website
 google analytics has been mentioned
 also check out OWA - http://www.openwebanalytics.com/
 Many content management systems also have some level of built in
reporting too.

Acquiring data from users via the website
web forms, mailto links, and linking to 3rd party services such as
survey monkey and google forms - have users create accounts and provide
data via web form.

And don't forget about automatically acquiring data from other sources
using RSS feeds, and APIs* - people can also post to the web via mobile
devices.
