Lurker here,

I believe that you need to use authoring software and authoring an electronic document is not the same as compiling it.

Mark I think you are on the right track with Dreamweaver and Powerpoint specifically. I also think that if Notepad or word is used to author HTML/PSP etc it should be fine as the student is authoring a document that can include text, graphics, sound or movies. I have had a general rule of thumb that three out of the four listed (text, graphics, sound, movie) need to be included in final presentation and that the software used to author it should be able to handle that or allow you to tag that appropriately. This is my specific definition to push the kids past a text based approach and is my adaptation of the definition. If the document is only text based then there is the scope of multimedia has not been challenged.

To me PDF is merely a way of putting it all together so it can be seen by many computers and is not authoring it specifically.

Regards,
