Modems! I remember my first modem in 1986.

300 baud.

Repeat 0.3k bps.

Then up through 14.4k, 28.8k to 56k bps - and now broadband. Worth 
mentioning to our students so they have some idea of how things have changed 
over the last 20+ years.
