Yes, Kevork, I do agree with you on the 'depth' of system design and its goals etc.
But after all, these 4 simple questions surely are a reasonable starting point..ie student to machine ratios, staff to machine ratios and so on, irrespective of the larger and more detailed intricacies of systematic and structured design which indeed, is expensive and specialized.
If nothing else, they may give some an ultra basic comparison of what other schools are resourced with even if not detailing the whole infrastructure or networked features or programs/training/support etc etc..
On the flip side...this could even be perhaps intertwined with the Unit 1 oc3 "issues" discussion perhaps...("digital divide" comes to mind as just one of the possible discussions...).

My 4 yr12's love talking about networks and new technologies hitting the market and who can access them and how, plus they also enjoy debating among themselves which op systems/applications etc are better than others and why. (I sometimes think they're a bunch of geeks! ). I'm enjoying this year in my subject area ...

hmmmm .....the mind boggles!

Hi Folks,

This is a very serious issue for all of us.
I think we need a feedback form and specific data to be submitted to ensure we get the whole picture.

This is a strategic, tactical and operational discussion all meshed into one . It makes me a little frustrated when we use operational resourcing formula as the be all and end all.
Who is thinking about the development and customisation of the "system" ? Surely not the routine support person who fixes printers, USB drives, internet accounts, carries out backup recovery etc.

To design or redesign a network is a heavy lifting activity. Consultants can be brought in , but does it align with the organisation's goals and objectives ?

I want to design a feedback form to get the right information.
All input towards the design is welcome on or off list.

Best Wishes

Kevork

Would it be possible to publish a summary of the survey results when in about a week or so?
It would make good discussion with many school decision makers...mine included!
I for 1 would be interested in the summary.

The results and feedback so far are intrigueing and informative to compare my school with!

Hi Everyone,

Since a lot of us are involved in running IT at our schools I was hoping to share ideas/stats about how different schools manage technical support and what sort of support is required. In particular I am after answers to the following questions:

1. How many IT support technicians you have?

2. How many students?

3. How many computers?

4. How many different technologies your technicians support eg. timetable package, intranet server, webserver, pcs, macs, linux, ..

Thank-you

Liam
