[Year 12 IT Apps] Using Wikis..for a newbie!

Kent

I have set up a few wikis for my kids - I put a few links in an earlier post
today.

I use them with my Year 12 classes to communicate with the kids and post
homework/messages etc. - the way that they communicate with each other has
been fantastic, esp. ensuring the girls talk to the boys and the geeks talk
to the non-geeks.

The junior classes have used them to work in virtual teams in creating
powerpoints, record their progress and develop research plans. My other
junior class have individual pages that they use to build a digital
portfolio of their progress in Geography, initiate research projects and
present their findings.

I use wetpaint wikis - send invitations to the kids to join (thereby
ensuring that no-one else can get in), and post their homework/tasks on the
homepage. Some of the wetpaint templates are really good (the assignment
one is good).

When the students accept the invitation, they need to create an account -
which requires their name and DOB - wetpaint doesn't allow U16's (?) to
join, so I ask the kids to guess my age and use the year I was born!

The kids really like them and enjoy the communication aspect - I also set up
an 'off-topic' page, where they can have their non-work related chats (which
I moderate)

filerequest

Hi
***** Allan Barnes requested the attachment - I've included my preamble to
put it in context.
***** I'm having limited success with other solutions - RealPlayer is
probably best

There are many solutions to downloading Youtube and other video from
websites.

I've just spent 2 days at an overnight conference for our staff (at a winery
and I don't drink!).

It was focussed on practical ICT stuff - photostory, blogs, forums, digital
portfolios, webquests.

Unfortunately I had to miss the Prin's presentation on Ultranet as I was
setting up for my first session!!

It was a very successful 2 days - staff felt genuinely enthused (and
up-skilled - if that's a real word!).

I showed keepvid as a simple solution to getting Youtube stuff for use at
school - it's blocked at MontySC.

A few found the instructions a little daunting and asked for a guide. as the
weather was freezing I spent the hour after the sessions finished writing
the attached instead of wandering the beautiful countryside. I guess that
may qualify me as a NERD!

I mentioned a few other solutions at the bottom - these require
installation, but are then quite easy. keepvid requires a file name change
which some may find difficult - but should pick it up once shown.

keepvid only works with a limited number of sites. Some other solutions work
with a greater varietyof sites - some will even grab Newstopia from SBS!

Well, maybe not a newbie teacher, but newbie to wikis!
Hi folks, I have just introduced myself to setting up a wiki(this is new to
me so stop laughing!).
I'd love to hear from others who use this tool and how they use it
effectively...yes, I'm serious here..I have set up a page for each of my
classes here and would like to hear from other's experiences.
How does Moodle compare to using a Wiki space? I already am feeling that
the Wiki is friendlier than Moodle and my learning curve here is only 24hrs
old!
I am considering using it as a planning tool too as I'm not exactly a great
organiser, more an ideas person.
Am guessing already that this is a great virtual collaboration tool too!
Oh, and I also noticed we can create a blog on the same site...how cool!!

Getting all excited over this new toy so best get back to work....

Others thoughts?

Kent.
