Hi Keith,
have you considered the option of a cd tower/server unit eg a unit that mirrors CD'S to a large hard-drive so you can then store the CD and set permissions to share over the network?
Here's another thought given current trends..some centralized point that students can plug in USB's etc in a similar fashion to the now 'old technology' of CD towers.
Also, portable ridiculously large amounts of storage are now available for sub $1000 mark...typically 1 terabyte for about 5-600 bucks!

We dont have CD rom access on our workstations, just USB ports at the front of the machines for students and others to plug in various devices...(computing devices!)..

Just some thoughts..

Subject: [Year 12 IT Apps] Advice Request - Workstation Purchase

Hello All - thank you for your recent help oin my last query - most
appreciated.
Our IT committee has asked me to fire away another query:
We will be buying approximately 40 workstations (computers in Primary
classrooms) running XP, with the usual paraphenalia, such as CD/DVD,
USB2 socket, Firewire, Sound card, ethernet card, etc. For me the most
important thing is top have reliable back-up service when things go
wrong, ideally where they will come in and fix the machine.
Up till now we have purchased locally, but I have been asked to spread
the net more widely, for comparison at least.
Any recommended suppliers, good experiences stories etc?
Cheers, Keith
Keith Richardson
