[Year 12 Its] Blogs/podcasts - guide

Hi Laurie,

Here's a quick guide in creating podcasts but the 1st tutorial is in
establishing a blog - basically, they are related. : )

http://www.dlsweb.rmit.edu.au/set/pace/podcast/guide.pdf

I hope it helps, feel free to distribute, alter, print, etc.

Btw, a note with blogs, I'd turn off the commenting function or better
yet, make a group in Blogger that only your class has access. If you
are wanting to establish a blog server in your school - have a look at
Wordpress and suggest that you get a 'play area' or 'sandbox' of
Wordpress.

I'd love to hear some feedback so keep me in the loop if your students
did benefit from the blogging/podcasting experience.

Best regards,

Michael

Hi.

Not specifically related to I.S...but anyway, I need some advice on
podcasts & blogging I am going to run with some year 9 students as a
project.

Initially, it'll be Intranet based, but later on it could go on to the
Internet.

Any thoughts what is suitable for this level students?

Thanks you.

I did a very short module on blgging with my Y9 class last semester. I
used howstuffswork website for excellent definition of what blogs are
and how to set one up. I then used blogger.com to set up a blog for them
to post their blogs. They then created their own blogs. Nice, short
enjoyable unit.

I hate to always be a downer, but your pen picture of blogging unit
leaves
out any significant educational objectives.
There of course are many ideas related to blogging in terms of the how
such
software works and was designed; it's development from open source
communities and their rationale for existence, operation and potential
effect on the future of IT; business models and social effects of
blogging
services that are growing at such an enormous rate (such as My Space) -
and
of course the growing bundling of services such as image libraries
(software
convergence, technical considerations such as the global fall in storage
costs due to HD innovation and volume) etc etc

The problem is really that such casual pen pictures sometimes either
reveal
or mistakenly infer that a "how to" lesson (i.e. training) that
"engages"
students is somehow of educational value.

When we look at blogs, we need to focus on what understandings they can
illustrate about the structure and operation of the technology; how it
is
influences by hardware and software developments; why humans are
attracted
to use it; the social implications of such use; the way in which such
social
involvement can generate money; etc, etc.
It could just as well be iTunes -
"I did a very short module on iTunes with my Y9 class last semester. I
used
howstuffswork website for excellent definition of how it works are and
how
to set up an account. I then used iTunes to set buy some music. They
then
created their own accounts. Nice, short enjoyable unit."
