We have installed Audacity at the University of Ballarat as part of a
set of Digital Storytelling applications.

It has not caused any problems on our network.

Good luck,

Rupert.

Hi all,

Just wanted to know if anyone was aware of any programs like Audacity
that are
available to purchase. My technician refuses to put Audacity on the
network as
he doesnt like putting shareware or freeware on the network for
security

reasons. I know what many of you may say - I had a long conversation
with the
technician to no avail. Can anyone recommend another sound editing
software
that is not too expensive and not too complicated for students.
thanking
you.

Your next port of call is your principal not your technician.
Your needs and those of the students are a priority over the
technicians reluctance to add something he is not really familiar with.
Security issue my right knee!!!!!

I always top post it just makes sense.

The main offender is probably in Thailand(??) by now (you out there
Ron?)

I'm not sure we did agree or whether we were told to top post.

In Thunderbird, you can select whether to automatically top or bottom
post the reply.

And yes, last year we did decide to top-post in this list.

Dear Sylvia,

I have been using 'Audacity' here for a long time without issue. Time
you took control of the situation in my view.

It's not a techs call. I would involve you admin. immediately... this
is nonsense.

Hmmm - I think you need to think more about the choice of technician
than the choice of software. "Security reasons"???

I use Adobe Audition, which is expensive, but very good.

There is Ace of Wave (was Acid Wave) $45
http://www.polyhedric.com/software/ace/index.html

Acoustica $10
http://www.sonicspot.com/acoustica/acoustica.html

and many others
http://www.sonicspot.com/sampleeditors.html

but I have not used them...

Audacity is a sensational program and I cant believe your tech has the
Audacity to refuse, he clearly has no clue. There are a lot more
technicians on the market than there are good audio software!!!!!!

Audacity is used professionally at Melbourne radio stations such as
FOXfm. It is industry standard software. Don't give up on this one.

Audacity is not shareware. It is Open Source software.

Apple recommend it.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/audacity.html

I'll 'sell' you a site-licence to use Audacity,
and arrange software support if that's what you need.

Here's a list of audio editors. But I don't know if
any of this is actually commercial proprietary software.
http://www.sonicspot.com/sampleeditors.html

Good luck Sylvia

Donna.

Careful!!!!
You don't want to start an argument about clever marketing vs the
establishment.
Please clarify organisational benefit?
We are a multi platform school here and the benefits far outweigh the
negatives so please don't make those assumptions.
