[Year 12 IPM] Audacityto be precise:

open source = Generically, open source refers to a program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge, i.e., open. Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community. Open source sprouted in the technological community as a response to proprietary software owned by corporations.

share ware = Software distributed on the basis of an honor system. Most shareware is delivered free of charge, but the author usually requests that you pay a small fee if you like the program and use it regularly. By sending the small fee, you become registered with the producer so that you can receive service assistance and updates. You can copy shareware and pass it along to friends and colleagues, but they too are expected to pay a fee if they use the product.

Syliva, tell your tech that due to the increased cost of software you are forced to let him go!!!

On a serious note - audacity is neither freeware nor shareware - it is open source software (and if he doesn't know what that is he doesn't deserve to be a tech).

Ask him to download the file, install it on one machine which is isolated from the network and then run all the virus and spyware scans he can think of. When he is happy that the installation process will not harm the system he can install it on all machines.

  Cheers

Home computers are being called upon to perform many new functions, including the consumption of homework formerly eaten by the dog.

  Dear Sylvia,

I dare that technician to find a solution to your dilemma. If he/she
can't suggest anything, then bad luck, he/she has to install the
software and monitor the network traffic for any malicious activity.

He/she is giving a bad impression on ICT professionals.

That aside, Adobe Audition is what I would suggest if you are going to
purchase (with a good budget though).

Btw, have a look at this:

  www.educationau.edu.au/papers/open_source.pdf

It "will" help. : ) Audacity is in page 24.

  Best regards,

  Michael
