[Year 12 IPM] Exam Post Mortem now online

Hi All,

I thought I'd put my 2 cents worth in (it can be rounded down if you like ;-)

I think a lot of discussion is really generated by the fact that this is a "bridging" subject. From the study design this subject "focuses on why information is used in organisations and the ways in which it is processed and managed". The first part is obviously looking at business management ( "real world") uses of the technology while the second part has aspects of computer science ("how the stuff works").

Being a Science/Maths graduate who has worked as an Analyst/Programmer before becoming a teacher I have trouble with aspects of the first part. Since IT is now more of a generalist field of study I assume there a some teachers who have a different background. I think that this could be why there is a difference between IT and nearly all other VCE subjects that I can think of. I could be wrong but, most other subjects taught solely by teachers who are "experts" in that field AND those subjects have (historically) clearly defined boundaries.

It seems to me that there would be very few IPM teachers who are both Business and Science "experts". I know that I teach to my strengths and try to use the text book and this list to make up for my short comings. Hopefully my students aren't disadvantaged to much by having me as a teacher.

It would be interesting to find out what are the proportion of Science/Humanities/Business/IT teachers teaching the subject and how many are from a professional IT background.

*******

Does anyone know which outcome Q3 relates to? I can't find any that deals with "the method by which data is recorded" for hardware. This seems to be a very technical question that doesn't appear to relate to the study design.

Hear, hear, Paula,

Personally, I get sick of the negative scrutiny every year immetiately after the exam is over.

It's easy to criticise. Perhaps those who are so critical might consider putting there money where there mouths are and joining the groups that put the exams together to see if they could do a better job.

Then see if you can put together the perfect exam.

Personally I felt that this year's exam allowed the weaker students to access most of the questionsand the brighter students the opportunity to strut their stuff.

You just can't please all the people all the time.
