Hi Brett,

Is it possible to create a partition on a server and run Icecast from there or do you need a dedicated server?

Thanks,
John

Sorry Brett this is all new to me. How do you get the content onto the multimedia server, so that it can be broadcast.

Kind regards,
John

Thanks for the great advice Brett, Jamie and Roland. I'm trying to weigh up my options now.

The iTunes radio seems like less hassle to setup and will be more realistic if we don't have an old server. However, I think you need iTunes to listen to their radio, which is a small barrier and it is a hefty application for slower machines too.

The quality of the streams in the Icecast directory seem pretty awesome to me. If you have a dedicated server with Icecast in the school it should run quickly within it and put less load on the network too. Brett which application did you use to transmit your recordings to the server. I thought iCast Pro looked interesting for recording material from you iPhone!

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

You can set up an Icecast server very easily, see here http://www<http://www/>. icecast.org/. It’s all open source and runs on any modest native box, basically you old dunger you were throwing out will run it. Students can listen via VLC by specifying a network stream or you can create a page for the stream and run it off a webserver. There is a mountain of free support material around for it.

The music will be much more problematic than the technical aspects of the set up. If you limit the stream to inside your network, ie keep the icecast server inside the DMZ with no external IP then you could probably use the schools copyright assignment agreement to cover you. In Victoria for example the state government contributes to a scheme that reimburses producers for notional re use of their work in certain circumstances. For example recording and re broadcasting free to air TV within the organisation for the purposes of education. Might be worth investigating if such an agreement exists in China and whether your school is part of a larger body that is a signatory to it.

If you intend to broadcast externally you’ll need to contact the Chinese equivalent of APRA to work out royalty fees, they may have a blanket cover fee based on your expected audience and content or you may perhaps need to pay per broadcast. You’ll need to investigate.

Hope that helps a bit.

Brett Groves

Apologies for the multiple posts I thought they weren't going through the list, because I think in the past I received a copy back through the list! Podcasting through iTunes sounds like a great option. I am working at a start up school in China there may be issues with setting up a HAM radio station here.

Browsing through http://www.copyrightandschools.org/

It sounds like you need a license for playing music http://www.ppluk.com/en/I-Play-Music/Radio-Broadcasting/Radio-types/Online-radio-and-services/

Hopefully we can get the students to create jingles and a bit of music for reuse. I'm guessing Apple might pull content with commercial music and ask questions later about licenses.

Kind regards,
John Helmy

I'll admit that I was curious about using Apple Radio to cue podcasts for a channel. It is probably too hard to generate so much content but you should be able to broadcast live and repeatedly reshare these shows on a schedule. From memory, there is a copyright problem, even if only a few seconds music is played in the background. We have to be vigilant with our ACCELN hangout if this happens or we get an automatic ticket from Google. Have you given thought towards setting up a amateur or HAM radio station?

Live Internet Radio

Hi all,

I'm investigating a free, simple path to hosting a live Internet radio station from our school. What equipment and hosting do you recommend, so that we can play music and speak live on the station?

Kind regards,
John Helmy
