[elearning] purchase as needed... or list of Apps

I think they (both students and staff) need to have a starting point... and I have pointed out to our students and staff that when they find a new app that does something "cool" or useful they should share with the rest of us :) We often are time poor, and the kids find great apps
I don't think there will ever be a perfect list... as new apps will replace those we initially list
And there must be some personal choice too.... Some people hate evernote, and prefer different apps that do the same thing.... That's a personal choice...
I put to the kids, here are apps that will do the task, but if you find a better or more useable one to do the same job, by all means use it.... They are not limited to the suggested apps

Another I am looking at, but need to get an iTunes card is the Google Docs to go app, which would replace the need for something like pages to do word processing type stuff...
The other feature which I am exploring at the moment on the Macbook is the iBook Author, which allows you to create iBooks and share them through iTunes... awesome for creating references

I'm genuinely wondering why the model isn't "Purchase-as-needed"? I wonder why you pre-load selected apps for what is meant to be a "personal device". I always thought that the idea was that you have a "problem" or task that could use some help to solve and the kids learn to select the safest, best or most appropriate app for the task (initially with lots of guidance)? Or aren't we up to that yet? Is it still that the teacher expects to use "this app" and only "this app" so they are familiar with it? Or is it the logistics of purchasing on behalf of the kids?
I don't see as much progress in using a pre-loaded iPad as having a kid learning to select the most appropriate and cost-effective app for the task - something we do. (Or do we just get kids to lazily trawl Twitter for "Here's a great list of edu-apps" tweets?)
Again this is undoubtedly age dependent, but is it achievable?

HI all

Ringwood's Website has lists of both free and paid app that we get the students to start with. The students purchase $50 worth of app that is it the rest are free. No textbooks. I have attached a flyer for two professional learning sessions that the boss and I are running in June if you are interested.

Probably our most used app is SmartNote as any PDF you have can be opened and annotated then emailed or added to a dropbox - free and a paid version too.

Hi

I also would like to know more apps, tricks and how people are having success with them inside the classroom.

Vermont secondary college will be going to iPads for year 7s next year. The apps list is huge and I usually find that you need a few to get the results you want. But this is ok. I love that staff are looking for apps as the are unknowingly curriculum planning at the same time.

This what we get the staff to do soon as they get the iPad.

How to integrate the iPad into your normal school day. This will increase your productivity.

Level 1.

1. Security and customization.

- set up wireless

- Add a password through the settings, general tab. This is 4 digit code.

- iTunes account. Set one up so you can download apps.

- Email setup. Have the school email pushed the iPad. This makes checking and replying to your emails really easy. Refer to handout that was given to you when you received your iPad. This can also be done for your other email accounts.

- Use The calendar function. Make appointments, put in your timetabled classes, add other peoples calendar. So you are able to see what's happening for the day or week at a touch of a button.

- Download the do it tomorrow app. It's a checklist of that you need to do today. It feels so good when you cross out a to do item.

- Use the camera to take a photo of board work done in class. Save you trying to remember what you wrote and can be displayed really easy next time through a data projector in the next class, or put it up on moodle.

- Add the moodle and vews page to the home page. You can now mark your rolls and book things at the touch of a bottom.

- drag the do it tomorrow app to the bottom tool bar. You can have 6 here.i have safari, calendar, do it tomorrow, mail, apps stores and settings. You can have your most frequently used apps here.

I hope this helps..if you need help, just ask.

hi All

I have been looking at iPad apps (& Looking and looking ...)

I have also seen a number of lists from other schools.

it is certainly a real task to try to decide what to recommend to students ( and staff)

One of the helpful things is to recommend some games to students and staff - different for each group and year level!
They enjoy playing and very quickly learn the basics of multi-gestures, "mutli task bar", airplay (i now suffer through music in class though I have banned rap)

I am very happy to share my list - incomplete as it is -
and I would like to ask you --> what are the must have apps and why...

it is the last question that is hardest to answer!

my must have app (at the moment) is neu annotate plus ($0.99 at the moment)
with this one can write on pdf docs and the notes are saved with the pdf, can be emailed, can be shared

this is great when used with airplay in a classroom as the students can see where you feel a note is good and you can highlight on screen without having to highlight their work for them!

Before I buy any apps I read the reviews and often follow the "other people who bought this also bought.. " links --> I often reorder the reviews to read most critical first. Sometimes the reviews indicate a lack of effort on the part of the reviewers - but is that not the way of all nowadays?

please contribute your lists. I have redone mine as rtf and I have not got around to putting the cute little icons on them as many have done.
I have also att the pdf in case you look at it on your iPad!!
