Hi David and Liz
I spoke to Lorraine again yesterday, she said that they cannot use calico for the prototype. It has to be a high-quality prototype that is constructed to exactly resemble the preferred option and attempt to meet all of the evaluation criteria developed from the design brief. A less quality material can be used but not calico.
This will not be much of a time reduction, it is the same as doing the actual product. She said you could reduce the amount of embellishment that you put on the prototype as long as it is enough to assess the level of that skill.
So really the folio load has not been reduced.
Unit 3 outcome three is to start planning for production which in my case is the prepare the pattern and construct the calico toile, do a working drawing and production plan/timeline. This is a lot of work. A few of my students did trailing and testing last term while they were doing visualisation drawings, but those that didn’t are going to struggle to find time to do that.
Also they still need to do the research into volume production processes for their product. Is this really important in these circumstances? They learn about this in SAC 2 product development in industry.
At least the submission dates for the SAT have been extended.
Another change was that students could use secondary sources of research instead of primary. But primary research needs to be done if you are to achieve a high quality product.
All the best

Hi Liz, E.Italiano,

I found the presentation a tad misleading around their commentary regarding the time reduction and the suitability of submitting a “Prototype” instead.

From the Study design (my abbreviations – some extraneous text omitted):

the finished product in all units may be a high-quality prototype that is constructed to exactly
resemble the preferred option.

The prototype should also attempt to meet all of the evaluation criteria developed from the design brief

Appropriate substitute materials and processes may be used to create structure, form or finish if the
originally specified materials and processes are not available

All products must be full scale.
Mockups are trial models, process trials or calico toiles that are suitable for development stages only. They can
be made to a smaller scale and may not accurately reflect intended materials or finish.

--

VCAA indicated in the presentation that a prototype for Textiles could be a toile, and be sufficient – and that a prototype for Resistant Materials need not be full scale, and could indeed be manufactured from materials as divergent as cardboard, from unspecified other materials. I’d have a hard time making a prototype cardboard dining table to scale, showing accurate processes, don’t know about you folks.

The point of prototyping is to replicate unavailable, or unworkable materials in the technologically limited spaces we have, not to substitute a “Mockup” for a functioning item. Aluminium for Titanium, sure, but I think the VCAA advice presented there extended the idea beyond the scope of the study design as documented at present, and as presented in the administrative advice.

I really didn’t like that mixed message that was sent, really. Otherwise the presentation didn’t throw up much. I suppose you’d need to document the change to final garment being a toile in the “modification log”, and reflect on that in the evaluation process to make up ground.

Likewise, my students are finding development hard in ISO, struggling to be independently developing concepts – which makes sense really.

I’m hearing your pain.
I’ve never had a student submit a toil or prototype and I wouldn’t like to assess it against students who have completed a full scaled product. Hopefully now that we will be returning to school we will be able to get the production completed in time and not have to cross this bridge. However it would be interesting to hear from teachers where a prototype was presented for their year 12 SAT. I hadn’t thought of students not returning to school now but that is certainly something to think about.
It’s all steam ahead with the folio so we can get into trialing and testing materials and into production. Very minor changes to Unit 4 SAC 1 but its an easy AOS to teach and the students can relate to it with their purchasing and making judgements about products to buy. Information from the webinar just reinforced the changes. Preamble from CEO and other person I felt wasn’t necessary.
I’m not sure about other Year 12 teachers but I’ve really struggled with students staying motivated and doing the research required. I’ve been at this school less than 12 months but have found they need lots of hand holding which is difficult when you aren’t there to do that.
Not sure what others have experienced.
Take care everyone. Its been an exhausting time.
Cheers,
Liz
Ps Marianne and others for sending through some new and interesting videos which I’ve used. Greatly appreciated. Thank you, thank you.

HI Lorraine
Were you in the webinar this morning related to the adjusted study design?
I was in the webinar but still have a few questions which I have emailed to Leanne Compton.
What are your thoughts?
If students do a prototype/calico toile instead of the final garment it would be difficult to evaluate the finished product according to the criteria that they set at the start. Because they may not be able to do the embellishment process on the toile nor can they judge it on certain aspects if it is made out of a different quality fabric. Is the finished quality of the toile expected to be the same as the real product?
If all goes well and students come back and stay at school until the end of the year it should not be a problem, they are able to complete the real garment.

Also what if a few parents choose not to send their child back to school on May 26 due to health reasons?
They will not be able to do any production. How do we assess them for this?

Circular Strategies was established as a result of researcher collaboration at TU Delft. Brian is an expert in how to design, implement and assess the impact of new business models in the context of a circular economy. He will discuss strategies businesses can take for a life-cycle based, systemic and multi-actor approach toward circular economy.

Brian’s session will be contextualised by MSDI researchers, Julie Boulton and Aleasha McCallion, who will highlight the needs of the Australian TCF industry, drawing on their research into the drivers and barriers to transition to a CE as identified by representatives.
