Well said and completely agree with all points stated also. It’s not good enough! The need to champion change now appears to be falling on deaf ears and the front line workers and those they care for are paying the price. I think DATTA VIC and Study representatives need to challenge VCAA’s solutions. They represent the area.!

I agree whole heartedly with all thoughts expressed here.

I met with our principal yesterday, and expressed my similar views. He feels the same.

Our school is regional with some students travelling over an hour / 80 kms away. All other subjects are taught remotely, so they would need to attend school, sit in a hall with all other students for other classes, to attend one period of PDT 4 days a week.

It's a weak position, ultimately a flexible/floppy way to tick boxes.

Disappointing.

Thanks Dean and Jude,

Some very real concerns here:

  * The safety of our students and staff from COVID should be front and centre of this. The community of Victoria is in STAGE 4 lockdown so why should this idea of returning to school be even considered?
  * The mental health of our students and staff should be paramount rather than put unnecessary pressure on them at a time when they are under enormous pressure, with home situation, jobs lost, family violence, not seeing family etc etc
  * I have a strong issue with safety and with kids rushing to get their work done, corners will be cut and accidents will happen.
  * Another concern is that some teachers will make the product for the students, so they end up with a completed product and can save face to both parents, colleagues and the school alike.
  * What about Jude’s situation? Can’t get to school, some students have machines and others don’t. How is that scenario going to pan out as being equitable?
  * It is not possible to make a product in 5 weeks!!!! As Dean has stated, some students haven’t access to materials as they hadn’t been ordered, but others do. How is that equitable amongst his students?
  * What if some students parents wont allow them to return to school but others do? How is that equitable?
  * How are others feeling about this? It seems to be just a few squeaky few making noise.
  * Are others happy or not?
  * This is a ridiculous situation to be placed in and the unnecessary stress placed on both students, staff and parents is unfair at a time when our mental health is paramount.
  * Is a student going to be satisfied making a few components of the product, not assembled or finished, but an incomplete waste of money and time or would prefer to focus on finishing criteria 4 and 5 well and studying well and feeling confident for the exam. All equitable, all working safely from home away from COVID infection as the rest of the community is doing.
  * Attached are the criteria 6-9. How does this get marked equitably if a students cant access materials and the workshop, when others can.

I am furious over the decisions that have been made for us, our students and parents with no correspondence with those that actually teach the subject!!!
What do people think?
We need to be united on this and make a stand if you agree with what has been put forward here.
Thanks,
Liz

Hi All,

This was the response I received from Leanne Compton @ VCAA (see below)

I understand it is all about ‘ranking’ the students against the SAT, but what happens if some students do not even get the opportunity to start the practical element due to restrictions? How can we still select some ‘indicators’ from criteria 6-9?

If this becomes the case, surely this will have an effect on the students study design score?

Dean.

Subject: RE: SAT assessment - Product Design 2020

Dear Dean

Thank you for your email in regard to the Principal letter that provides information about conducting Essential Assessments onsite.

It is a school-based decision as to whether essential school-based assessment will be conducted onsite. While the Principal letter states that schools are able to conduct essential assessment onsite, it also provides flexible options that
‘Schools and non-school secondary providers can delay essential assessments where it is not possible to access the school site during school closure. For those schools and non-school secondary providers that have made arrangements for assessments to be conducted remotely with assurance of validity, this can continue’.

In conducting Essential Assessments onsite for Unit 3 and 4 VCE, all providers must follow all COVID-19 related Health directions and Department of Education and Training guidelines as well as Specific controls for Essential Assessments for VCE and VCAL approved by the Department of Health and Human Services. School-assessed Task (SATs) for Product Design and Technology must not be completed at home without appropriate supervision and competency tests for use of tools and machines (refer to the Department of Education and Training’s Use of Machinery in Technology Teaching webpage<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ZmSkCp8AyytrrkkIDLoO9?domain=education.vic.gov.au>). Further advice for school principals and teachers on the remote delivery of learning programs is found on the VCAA COVID-19 website https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/news-and-events/latest-news/Novel%20coronavirus%20update/Pages/SchoolsandEducators.aspx#RemoteAssessment<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/I5BBCzvOMMillDDhVKKhE?domain=vcaa.vic.edu.au>

The purpose of school-based assessment is to rank the school cohort so the VCE Product Design and Technology SAT results for each school cohort should reflect the performance and relative ranking of student results across the whole assessment scale for these studies. The scores for VCE Unit 3 School-based Assessments are due to VASS on Monday 12 October 2020, and the scores for all remaining VCE School-based Assessments and School-assessed Tasks are due to VASS on Wednesday 18 November https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/administration/Key-dates/Pages/2020RevisedAdminDates.aspx<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/dfvzCr8DAAtKKMMUyeUq1?domain=vcaa.vic.edu.au>.

All mandated criteria need to be used when assessing student work. However, not all indicators listed for each criterion may be used. Therefore, teachers can use some or all indicators listed for each criterion to form a judgement about student work. Teachers need to ensure that the same indicators are used for the assessment of all student work at the school and that the conditions to undertake the SAT does not privilege or disadvantage certain groups of students within the school cohort – this is especially relevant to Product Design and Technology where there are various materials being used e.g. textiles versus wood. Students may not necessarily complete a product in VCE Product Design and Technology; however, the teachers can still use the indicators listed for each criterion to determine the ranking of their cohort of students. The indicators provide guidance to both teachers and students about the focus of each criterion and place emphasis on the product design process; there is no one criterion that focuses solely on the finished product.

The VCAA is continuing to take a flexible and agile approach to meeting issues around the coronavirus (COVID-19) and is relying on schools to be similarly flexible and agile in ensuring the continuity of learning and the delivery of school-based assessment during these times. It is a school-based decision regarding the conditions and arrangements for which school-based assessments are undertaken to ensure they meet the VCE assessment principles, the study design requirements and the requirements of the VCE and VCAL Administrative Handbook 2020. This may vary between schools and sectors given their cohort, resources and unique circumstances. Given the current situation, flexibility around the delivery of school-based assessment is expected.

I trust this addresses your query.

Regards, Leanne

Subject: SAT assessment - Product Design 2020

Hi Leanne,

I hope you are doing OK in these very testing and trying times.. I am sure you have been inundated with questions and queries regarding the latest news published by VCAA regarding SAT ‘essential assessment’ completion at school.

I am a member of the DATTA Vic team and there has been plenty of opinion and points of views in how this is interpreted to what subjects this applies to. I have, as well have many other Product Design Teachers, been hopeful that year 12 VCE could complete the practical element for the course. Knowing the number of changes and restrictions which have been forced upon us all due to COVID 19, I personally believe the timeframe remaining is inadequate for students to complete the practical element. The majority of my class have started practical work, but there are 3-4 students yet to start and some materials still haven’t arrived as they were due to by the start of this term. My other concern is the inequality across the state, there will be some students who maybe able to attend school, whilst others maybe in a completely different situation where schools remain closed or parents are not content with their children attending schools, as this even flows onto teaching staff or support staff as well.

The other concern which needs to be raised is the OHS with physical distancing. It is very difficult to assist students whilst maintaining the advised 1.5M distance and again this breeches the code of conduct for all concerned. The timeframe element will also aid to this OHS concern, with students and staff rushing to complete all practical work within the advised time to keep in line with all the other VCAA subject deadline dates.

There is still considerable amount of assessment which has already taken place being – Unit 3 outcome 1,2 and 3.
Plus to complete - Unit 4 outcome 1 and SAT criteria points 4-5 (in process).
I believe I can still provide indicative grades based on the above assessment.

Thank you for your time and I hope this information can support the clarity process.

Regards

Dean Lambert.
