Thank Carlin.
Yep it makes sense to me to.
I am so grateful for the response from everyone on my post. When I get closer to perching a machine I will defiantly be putting my options out there for everyones opinions.

Kind regards.

John

Hi John,

Definitely go with Illustrator as your school already has it! With colleagues on hand to help out, it is the way to go.

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the quick replys! We actually have Adobe illustrator on all of our Art/tech computers that are used by our VCD teachers and VCD students, I was not aware that it would work in conjunction with one of these machines. For the ease of already having it installed and having someone who would be able to teach me, would you suggest just going with that?

Regards.

John

Hi John,

There are a lot of programs available, all with their pro’s and con’s. CNC & Laser products can also have recommended programs to work with.

Personally I have been through a lot of different products, both CAD and other 3D model programs with students. I find that Autodesk Fusion 360 I am trialling this year has been the easiest. Specifically for students to pick up with a very easy learning curve without a scary screen or commands to remember. Other products like Autodesk Inventor/Autocad, although more powerful, quite a few students get lost. And Google sketch up, just is not what it used to be.

The negative to Fusion360 is the requirement for an account. But only my year 7’s had issues with this – your computer technicians may be able to assist with their school email address. (They can download the software for free at home)

Laser Cutting used to be in Corel/Illustrator but I am looking at Fusion directly now for that too: https://www.acemonstertoys.org/fusion-360-for-laser-cutting/

Kind Regards,

Hi my name is John, I teach Product design and Technology (wood) to years 9,10,11 and 12.
I am hoping to purchase a CNC or Laser cutter for the school in the next year. I have however, very little skill in using CAD programs. I was hoping someone could suggest a good program (i.e. Fusion 360, Auto desk, google sketch up, etc…) that would be able to work with one of these machines that I would be able to teach my self or do a course in to help me up skill. I would also be teaching the students to use the program as well.

Further to this if anyone has any suggestions/preference/experience with either a laser cutter or CNC machine that would be great.

Kind regards.
