I feel your pain Trevor. I think the key here is to insist on involvement with the process of student choice a maximum class sizes. I have always tried to keep an open communication with the people who are responsible for organising student choices and an agreement on class sizes is entered into. Any numbers over that should be discussed and agreed to depending on the year level and what you are making. Can I also suggest talking to your health and safety reps or even Union people if you cannot get satisfactory solutions from admin. All the best.

Hi folks!

I am the D & T wood teacher at Loyola college. I teach year 8, 9 & 10 wood.

My primary concern is the class size for year 10, this year it has been up to 27 students.

We make a small piece of furniture semester 1 and a coffee table semester 2. Managing larger products with a larger class size presents significant challenges. The areas in question comfortably accommodate 20 students making larger projects, not 27.

I have put together a proposal to the senior leadership team to reduce the class size to 20 students maximum. This has been based on occupational health & safety requirements, past student behavior, which has at times been extremely challenging, and the wood room layout.

The wood room is large enough to accommodate two year 8 class with 27 students, but we have a plant room that is linked to one side which substantially cuts the visibility to one side of the wood room. See diagram below.

Side a 27 students

Side b 27 students

My proposal is to have the year 10 class, on the same side as the plant room (side b) because they pose the greatest challenging behavior’s and safety risk, whilst also making the larger products. This area can accommodate 20 students comfortably.

Could I please get some feedback on class sizes at other schools for senior years.

Any information my aid my proposal would be much appreciated.
