Well, I may as well throw my hat into the ring.
My program www.safetytestingonline.com has been under development for a couple of years, but still has much work to be done. My program won't be free because there are costs to be covered, and an annual subscription costs 50AUD plus relevant taxes.

The program includes automatic assessment, cloud based record keeping and provides several different reports. It caters for unlimited students in up to six classes. Only woodwork at the moment, and for quite some time yet.

At the moment there are some 5000 American students using it smoothly and successfully, and a small number of Australian schools.

If you want to try it you can log in as a teacher to a virtual school complete with students. Log in at www.SafetyTestingOnline.com with the user name try-me at safetytestingonline.com and the password basil1.

You can also log in as a student with the user name Ray Charles with password 33qzs8.

 If you like the program and want to try it out, contact me at admin at safetytestingonline.com with your preferred email address, your school name, and the title of your most junior cohort of woodwork students and I will set up a trial for a couple of months.

The work I have to yet to complete includes a further seven specific safety quizzes while twenty seven quizzes are completed. I also have to upgrade the program to accommodate tablets and mobile phones and HTML5.

My understanding of the litigation aspects are this. To avoid a negligence legal claim you must mainly be able to show that you made the student aware of the foreseeable risks. If you can demonstrate that you did this, it is usually difficult to show that you have been negligent.
You can find a good discussion of this topic here. " Helen Newnham. Edith Cowan University. When is a teacher or school liable in negligence?". Available at http://ro.ecu.edu.au/ajte/vol25/iss1/5/ (You will find a download button there to read the document).

My name is Frank Carroll. In NSW I taught Industrial Technology at Sir Joseph Banks High School, Batlow Secondary College and Jindabyne Central School, and D&T at Snowy Mountains Grammar school. In Victoria I worked at Wonthaggi High School and Ballarat School of Mines. In between, I ran a high-class blackwood furniture manufacturing business for some 25 years, wholesaling into capital cities from Adelaide through to Brisbane, inclusively.

I am retired from teaching now.

Merry Christmass All.

Frank Carroll.

Awesome Job Mate,

Thanks for the work.

We have been also doing our own on Edmodo that self mark and then also are included on the gradebook.

Hence the record is kept.

At the end of the day no matter what software or package you use, YOU are the only one that is responsible for the students working safely, and it is only your bum that is on the line.

We as teachers have a responsiblity to ensure all the tools are serviceable and safe, along with the knowledge that we have taught them the correct work methods and supervise them thoroughly.

Keep up the great work and have a great Christmas

Cheers

Thanks for sharing this and also introducing me to the software. The thing I like about it is that it allows the teacher to match the questions to the specific tools,machinery and equipment within their environment.

With regards to Craigs response I have gone through your test, read your disclaimer and examined the results printout. You really are putting yourself in the legal firing line.I was curious as to why exactly this is so. Is it the creation of the resource , or the sharing of the resource that you feel is the legal issue, or both?

We all put ourselves in the legal firing line as soon as we walk into a workshop. It is the teachers responsibility to ensure that he/she takes all reasonable and responsible measures to ensure that all participants within the workshop environment are safe. I know this is stating the obvious for readers of this forum but I would have thought that the resource that Chris has created would meet this criteria.

Chris,

It’s always great to make new resources to share and you should be thanked for your work. I am concerned that you really haven’t thought enough about the legality associated with the creation of such a resource. I have gone through your test, read your disclaimer and examined the results printout. You really are putting yourself in the legal firing line. Assume that I use your test and all of my students receive the appropriate 100% result. Should a significant injury occur the executive of my school will call into action their legal team to investigate a number of items, one of which would be the testing system. Should this fail to meet industry standard or best practise, you as the creator and distributor irrespective of any payment or gratuities would be called to answer the case. Your training, experience and qualifications would be examined and scrutinised to establish your suitability. There is no “Good Samaritan” policy when it comes to WHS. Should any failings be discovered in your product unfortunately litigation would swiftly follow - with you, trying to do the right thing, ending up loosing your house. In my opinion, it is simply not worth the risk. Why do you think no one else has done it before ?

Cheers

Subject: Re: [esnet] Metal programs

Haven't had a Y10 class for a while as the HT seems to take them over after I have spent a year hammering the drop kicks, and they drop the subject, leaving him with a small class of fair kids.

Don't have plans but they are about for the Barby Pig that is currently popular.

Takes them a few terms to get together and here they have made several evolutions that are seeing them become patio heaters and camping stoves that have movable BBQ plates, Grills, billy holders, removable legs, various pokers, top and side loading points with various doors and vents etc.

Just have to supply a dead 9kg cylinder (we recommend the new ones that are actually fairly cheap) to reduce some of the smell and issues with cutting them.

Well worth hunting down plans. Open a google window and search choofer or choofers or choofer plans.

You should find something there to give the boys a direction to design from.

Follow all of the usual precautions for cutting a fuel container if you use a second hand bottle.

Remove valve, flushing, filling with inert gas or water etc etc etc. If you use 2nd hand ones, they stink up the store but are cheaper.

Good luck with the lads.

Fred

Yeah Edmodo is great isn't it.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have added a new test called The Safe Use of Woodwork Machines.

It covers band Saw, Disc Sander, Belt Sander and Wood lathe.

I have also refined the printout of all tests to print tests in more detail.

Please feel free to point out any problems so I can fix them.

Next is The Safe Use of Portable Power Tools.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

I made a free, online, interactive workshop safety test system that I'd like people to help me test and give feedback via the contact page.

Free to use for all teachers.

Worksheets free to download, modify and use.

I have uploaded the following modules including worksheets.

*	Tool Identification and General Workshop Safety
*
*	The Safe Use of Hand Tools

In the next week the following modules will be included:

*	The Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery
*	The Safe Use of Portable Power Tools.

The following will be done by 2016 although I'd like some help and advice on the following as they are not my main areas.

*	Metal Work
*	Textiles
*	Food Technology
*	Electronics
*	Construction.

One thing I'd ask if you decide to use it. Please click on the iSpring link on the site which is the software I used to make it. The guys there really helped me out

and I'd like them to see that it was worth their time.

Cheers and Merry Xmas. I'll let everyone know as I add more tests.
