Thanks so much everyone for your helpful replies. We have plenty of avenues to investigate now.
To answer the question on what we plan to cut. Nothing like 3mm steel plate. A multi material cutter will be the go and the ability to cut thin metal sheet will be a plus.

Hi Dean
We have had a laser cutter for about 3 years now. It was purchased from Origin Laser. Ross was and continues to be very helpful. It has a 600 x 9000 bed. It cost approx $15,000 brand new. He also sells the smaller version. It is worth going over to Oakleigh,
 where his business is located, to have a look and see a demo by Ross. Alternatively, come and look at ours.

We have an Epilog Mini Laser cutter 450 Length by 300 Width cutting area. Very good machine and does a great job. We bought ours
 2nd hand for about $10,000. You need to check the amount of hours the laser tube has left as this is expensive to replace once they go (so I have been told).

 
We cut / engrave wood and plastic and can laser metal through using a special spray.
