** Welcome from the President
------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all technology teachers,

There are lots of great things planned by DATTA Vic this term, mainly focussed on preparing VCE students (http://vic.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7ed735b6928a1ab8d30e6f12a&id=ce590785cb&e=ae7b9e9f4d) for their exams. Good luck (and much patience) to all teachers as the VCE production stage heats up.

** AusVELS curriculum delay
------------------------------------------------------------
According to the August VCAA Bulletin, the publication of the AusVELS curriculum for Phase 2 and 3 Learning Area Domains (including Technologies) that was planned for Term 3 has been delayed due to the Australian Curriculum Review, We will keep you informed with further news when it becomes available.

** Australian Technologies Curriculum implementation
------------------------------------------------------------
As part of my role as DATTA Aus. president, I’ve been involved in a number of national teleconferences with people from Technology organisations to discuss the implementation of the Australian Technologies Curriculum.

A message that came through strongly is that there are great things happening in all the states - events, programs, competitions, and placements of professionals in schools.

Many of these programs provide rich resources for teachers, but it’s sometimes hard to find out about them.

** Teacher resources
------------------------------------------------------------
The AIS (NSW) has provided a portal with links to a range of Technology (and Science) activities and organisations (http://vic.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7ed735b6928a1ab8d30e6f12a&id=80f9a96002&e=ae7b9e9f4d ) (I’m sure the AIS would also love to hear about events being run in Victoria).

I’ve been on leave for 6 weeks (travelling with my family) and would like to say thanks to those at my school and at DATTA Vic who have kept things going during that time.

Best wishes,

Jill Livett

** VCAA Report
------------------------------------------------------------

** F–10 Curriculum planning and reporting guidelines

------------------------------------------------------------
The general guidelines have been developed (http://vic.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7ed735b6928a1ab8d30e6f12a&id=d5c56640a7&e=ae7b9e9f4d) to provide advice for Victorian schools on using AusVELS to develop whole-school curriculum plans and to report student learning achievement.

These guidelines set out an approach to curriculum delivery based on understanding learning as a continuum. The guidelines also provide flexibility for schools to specialise in particular curriculum areas and to develop teaching and learning programs that suit their particular cohort.

Schools can work with their local communities to determine how best to report student learning to parents. There will no longer be a single mandated report format. Schools need to report student achievement against the curriculum standards set out in AusVELS, but have more flexibility in how they report that achievement to parents.

** AusVELS Curriculum Planning Resource website
------------------------------------------------------------
The AusVELS resource website (http://vic.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7ed735b6928a1ab8d30e6f12a&id=9c6b89f5ca&e=ae7b9e9f4d) offers school leaders resources to support planning and documenting a whole-school curriculum plan. It includes a self-assessment tool and curriculum planning examples for both primary and secondary schools.

** Five secrets for leadership success in teaching
------------------------------------------------------------
By Lorraine Tran

Positivity
I’ve found that doing the best you can rubs off on others. Each day brings challenges, so it’s important to use problem-solving skills to work out how best to overcome those challenges and not be too overwhelmed by them.

Privilege
Feel that every day you are lucky and privileged. When you feel privileged, you are thankful that not only has your education, skills and training been recognized, but that you can perform the responsibilities of the role entrusted to you.

Persuasiveness
Be strong and take people with you. You can do this by being a positive role model - whether you are a teacher, head of department or curriculum manager or have any other sort of leadership role.

Perceptiveness
Develop insight, intuition and try to understand and analyse problems. Read extensively, attend exhibitions, trade shows and professional development, and ask appropriate questions of people ‘in the know’.

Politesse
This is a mixture of empathy, respect, praise and even veneration. I’ve had the privilege of working with so many wonderful leaders, teachers and students over the years that celebrating their achievements has given both them and me a great sense of fulfillment.

Lorraine Tran is the DATTA Vic 2014 Technology Leadership Award winner.

** So You Think You Can Design final
------------------------------------------------------------
The 2014 So You Think You Can Design final was hotly contested between Simonds Catholic College, Northcote High School and Kardinia International College.

Two students selected from each school went head-to-head in a series of design challenges ranging from creation of mood boards, concept sketching, computer aided design and prototyping over 2 days.

Design briefs had students designing a wearable Epipen device for young people and a new World Cup trophy for the year 2030. All work was judged by teachers attending the conference.

It was incredibly close and the work of all three schools was outstanding. Kardinia College eventually took the top prize of 2 iPad minis by just 1 point over Northcote High.

Please email DATTA Vic if you would like your school to involved in So You Think You can Design 2015.
