Hi Lupco

this is my understanding of being allowed to teach.
and there are two different answers here.
the first is about getting permision to teach, this allows you to teach in a secondary school on a temporary basis at Instructor class classification (this is less than full money and not full registration).
the second answer, to get full registration as a secondary teacher you need to have four years of undergraduate training or equivalent. this is often obtained through a four year Bachelor of education or a three year degree and a one year dip ed, or for some technology teachers it is an apprenticeship, eight years of industrial experience (that includes apprenticeship)and then a Grad Dip in Technology Education. There is a formula where if the student teacher has a higher qualification than apprenticeship such as a Diploma then they dont need as much industrial experience. this is detailed on the Uni brochure and the VIT website.
this year Latrobe uni at Bundoora is i think the only uni offering a grad Dip in technology education. this is provided mostly as weekend classes over 18 months. many of the students in this program have permission to teach and are simultaneously working in a secondary school.
i have attached a link to the uni brochure if your interested.

Hi Lupco,
It may be true what VIT said, however if it is that makes a mockery of
education.
It would be very unwise for you or your principal to allow you to teach with
no tech qualifications. If any injuries occurred I do not think the
department would support you.
At the very least you would need to do the OHS training mandated every 5
years for wood/metal teachers.
I do not know of any specific courses but tafe courses are available.
You would also need to know what tools/equipment students can and can't use.
Being able to do woodwork at home is very different to teaching it, it is
constant, you are never able to sit down, you are followed by students every
minute of the lesson wanting help. There is a lot of preparation and
clean-up.
Maybe see if you can shadow a woodwork teacher for a few days.
I teach wood. It is my major and my love so I am not saying don't do it, I
am saying do not do it without some type of qualification.
Cheers, Heather Aeschlimann
