Dear Melissa,
Thanks I would love an emailed copy of the article to bakerkj at mlc.vic.edu.au - thanks.
In regards to what you have written below I would just like to add that this is my first year of teaching Design and Tech to Year 12, I taught Year 11 last year so I have some understanding of how much the Year 12 students are expected to know. I have spent many hours getting my head around SAC 2 and my students feel the same as yours, they hate being pulled away from their SAT folio. I find the overall course very complex and it has so many aspects and different terminology to remember. I even had a thought that it maybe worthwhile to look at manufacturing and industry at some stage in Year 11 to prepare them for the SAC in Year 12 so that it is more familiar.
Any way these are my thoughts

Thanks Jacinta,

My Dad gets the financial review so I will go and steal it from him. I can scan it and email a copy if anyone would like it. Let me know.

Am wading through this unit for the second year running. I have been thinking about why the students seem to struggle with this theory component more than the others. I think it is partly because it is all so new and out of their realm of experience in this world, but mainly because we are trying to learn about manufacturing & industry at the same time as research, trialling and developing design options for their SAT. Two very different tasks to run simultaneously. The students have commented that they feel like their time is being pulled in two directions and they are not sure what to focus on. Maybe I should run Area of Study 2 before 1 in Unit 3?

Would love to hear other's thoughts on this.

Regards

To teachers of VCE Design and Technology Unit 3

I noticed an article in the Financial Review on Saturday, the Weekend Edition May 16-17 2009 that would be an excellent case study for Outcome 2. It's on page 16 and titled 'Inventors put wheels in motion for expansion' by Stephen Crafti. The article has a very clear explanation of the company's product development process among other aspects related to this outcome.

Unfortunately I couldn't attach it as you need to subscribe to get the electronic version (which would be worth it).

regards
