Also remember that that the text book is NOT the study design.

There were issues with HDD exam having a question on it that was not covered
in the text book but was part of the study design.

Page 36 Study Design- "properties and characteristics such as strength,
durability, thermal resistance, hardness, density, rigidity, compatibility
of materials". The key knowledge is "factors that determine choice of
suitable materials".

Hi Melissa

 

All I can say is that . when you really look into characteristics and
properties over a wide range of materials there is a lot of overlap.
Sometimes in timber, characteristics refers to the appearance which is
slightly different from your interpretation below for fabric, and properties
refers more to how the material behaves.

My approach is to use the two words together and not be too particular about
the difference.

 

Hope this helps - others may differ?

Hi all,

 

Hoping for some clarification of terms.

 

In the DESIGN FACTORS & APPLICATIONS the term Materials - Characteristics &
Properties is used.  However when looking at fabrics in the text books the
term Characteristics never appears.

 

My interpretation was

 

Materials characteristics - what the fabric can do (i.e stretch,
transparent)

 

Material properties - The origin of the fabric and its construction (i.e
polyester plain weave)

 

 

However in the text books the use the term Properties to discuss what the
fabric can do and a whole range of terms to discuss the origin &
construction method (i.e identification, forms)

 

I am of the understanding we should be using consistent terminology based on
the Design Factors & Fundamentals.

 

 

Any advice/feedback welcome !
