[Design and Technology] RE: destech Digest, Vol 49, Issue 1

Many thanks Megan for raising this issue and to Heather and Stephen for
their responses.

With respect to Megan's question, annotations (in the Design and
Technology School-assessed Task) can be hand written or word processed
(typed) and printed. The relevance of the annotations (in relation to
the design brief, client/end-user requirements and in informing the
selection of design ideas/options) is the key - as mentioned by Stephen.
In addition to the assessment criteria mentioned by Stephen, references
to annotations appear in the Scope of the task on page 52 of the VCAA
February Bulletin Supplement 2009 Administrative advice for School
assessment on the Design and Technology page of the VCAA website
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/studies/designtech/destechindex.html

A small correction to Heather's contribution...authentication issues
must be noted on the Authentication Record for School-assessed Tasks
sheet (rather than the Additional Teacher Comment sheet). The
Authentication Record for School-assessed Tasks is available at
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/schooladmin/forms/vce/vce.html#H2N10038

Kind regards, Lorraine.

Hi,

There is no ruling that I know of within the D&T Study Design that
states folio annotations must be hand written. Please clarify me if I am
wrong. I know of students in the past who have received very high grades
for their Design Folio SAT(Outcome 3 Unit 3) and Production SAT (Outcome
3 Unit 4) that have done so with typed annotations throughout their
product research, design idea and design option development stages.

In fact a student presented a digital folio that was shown on a laptop
in Top Designs in 2007 I am pretty sure all this folio was typed with
downloaded and CAD images.

The award of grades for these skills (annotations) is included within
criteria 2-5 of the Design folio and production assessment sheet. How
annotations add to the award of grades, for each of these marking
criteria is based, primarily, on their relevance to the Design Brief.
Student are awarded higher grades if they show comprehensive and
effective exploration of their established criteria. Annotations help
them to do this by clarifying, justifying and evaluating each stage of
their products development.

Hope this helps.

Stephen

Hi Megan,

I am teaching VCD this year as well (for the first time) and was
surprised by the "hand written only" ruling in the notes. D&T has never
treated that as an issue and in my experience if students want to cheat
they could just as easily hand write someone else's notes. I think you
know when authentication is an issue, and if you get externally assessed
then write this on the Additional Teacher Comment Sheet.

Cheers, Heather

Dear colleagues,

When students are annotating research pages, design ideas etc. is it
best to have hand written annotations? Some students prefer to type them
and I am concerned there might be authentication issues, it is also less
spontaneous when they type.(but some handwritten annotations are
difficult to read)

I know in Visual Communications the annotations need to be handwritten.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Megan Duggan
