"The Art of Fashion"
Exhibition open until 21 September

A dress made from a pressed metal ceiling and a hat made of flywire are just two of the amazing pieces on display at the Australian Academy of Design's Clement Meadmore Gallery at 220 Ingles St, Port Melbourne. Exhibition open Mon - Fri 9am-5pm

This exhibition provides a fresh look at some of the objects and accoutrements of the fashion industry. Inspired by the elegance usually associated with haute couture, the industrial materials have been reinterpreted to create something new. Garments made of folded and desiccated paper, rolled and folded door-screen wire, and garments of garden ivy inspired by the aesthetics of the materials are combined to create a new aesthetic.

Opening at the Australian Academy of Design's Clement Meadmore gallery during Melbourne's Spring Fashion Week, this exhibition is set to challenge boundaries and distinctions, and engage Academy students and the public in debate about what constitutes art and fashion.

Curated by Isabel Sweetapple and Malcolm Thomson, the exhibition celebrates the introduction of fashion design courses at the Australian Academy of Design.
Featuring work by Australian artists and fashion designers Jenny Bannister, Gemma Nightingale, Brigit Heller, Rosanna Modica and Deb Sleeman.

It was the comments of outstanding French fashion designer Coco Chanel and author Henry Fuseli that prompted the Australian Academy of Design to contemplate an exhibition which might focus attention on the changing aesthetic of fashion design. Fuseli's comment, "Fashion is the bastard of vanity, dressed by art" provoked consideration of the links between art and fashion design. Chanel's observation that "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening" stimulated the brief for the artists in "The Art in Fashion" exhibition. Fashion design meets art to craft new and unexpected objects.

The exhibition is open to the public 9am-5pm Mon-Fri until 21 September
