Subject: Design software -Help!

We have been looking for some design software suitable for our Design
Education programme at Rosebud S.C. After a protracted period of
procrastination it appears to have been narrowed down to three packages:
AutoDesk Inventor, Solidworks and SolidEdge.

The final choice will be governed by a number of factors:

1. the software must be able to perform in disparate areas of our
technology curriculum - i.e. Product Design, Engineering, Furniture and
sheet metal. Additionally, electronics functions would not go astray.

2. It must be suitable for entry-level users at Year 7 up to VCE level
for more sophisticated design development.

3. It must offer a drafting (draughting?) capability; conventional 2D
and 3D drawing.

Each of the above packages has strengths and weaknesses. We need to
reconcile initial costs, ongoing maintenance and useability, with our
own curriculum needs.

We are looking for schools running any of these packages so that we
could evaluate it in the field. Any comments or offers to visit would be
greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Gary Wragg
