Dear colleagues

An article Playing it safe with technology is published on the back page
of the latest issue of Education Times (December 6, 2007). I highly
recommend that you read this article. The link to Education Times is:

http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/news/edtimes/onlineeditions.htm

The article in the Professional Learning section of the Education Times
includes teacher reflections on the pilot of the Safe Use of Machinery
for Technology Teaching course. The pilot course is being conducted at
Ballarat Secondary College and Wheelers Hill Secondary College. Max
Andrews from Holmesglen Safety, a department of Holmesglen Institute of
TAFE has developed the teaching materials.

The aim of the course is to reduce injury risk to students and teachers.
It provides teachers with practical training in the safe use and
maintenance of machinery, but also includes some OH&S theory.

The pilot course will be evaluated and then it is intended to roll out
the course (and associated test) to all schools. It will not be mandated
that all (wood/metal/plastics) technology teachers take the course,
however testing in the safe use of machinery will be.

The Safety in Technology Panel Report is available at
