Hi Roland, Ken and others -

Paul Wexelblat reached out to me on the weekend. He provided me with some further information about how Logo was developed at BBN in Cambridge, MA. For those interested – his email is written below (and he is happy for me to share this):

"Just a couple of facts (as I may be the last surviving participant of the Logo project). 🙂 Logo was developed at BBN, in Cambridge, MA -- you know, BBN, the folks who brought you The Internet. The prime mover was Wally Feurzeig who had contract for the development, and Marvin was a consultant on the project. Seymour joined soon after the work was started. These three came up with the design for Logo; the first implementation was as a LISP program on one of the BBN PDP-1 computers, later implemented in assembly language on another BBN PDP-1 (all work done by BBN programmers). The first use of Logo in a school was under another BBN Gov't contract with Wally as prime investigator. One day, the three of them came into my office and described the idea of a turtle and asked if I could build a wireless Turtle and modify Logo to handle the commands. I did this.
All that was to let you know that up to this point Logo and the Turtle were developed/invented/programmed and run completely at BBN with Wally as the prime mover.
After all this was done (concept proven and a bunch of other buzzwords) BBN stepped back and the MIT folks took the developed product and continues (doing wonderful stuff IMO) - But I hate to see the creative work done by us at BBN forgotten."

Anyway- after reading with interest - I wanted to know more about Paul and it led to this website. - http://cyberneticzoo.com/tag/paul-wexelblat/

Ken – there is reference and a section devoted to the “Logo Down Under” - the Tassie Turtle.

Happy reading :)

Cheers
Therese

Ken, I found one at Melbourne Uni, took some digging around to find out what it was. Certainly worth celebrating :-)

The original link to this document by the Tasman Turtle inventor, Alan Branch is broken but I kept a copy here

Dear colleagues

Therese Keane, Swinburne University, has co-authored an article published in The Conversation, that might be of interest about Seymour Papert – enjoy the read.
