Unit 3 Outcome 2 IP&M - 2003

Solve an information problem, taking into account the goals and information needs of an organisation.

This outcome will contribute 50 marks out of the 100 marks allocated to School-assessed Coursework for Unit 3. It will be assessed by one task.

Task

Description

Information technology solution in response to a design brief and a report in one of the following modes:

·          A written report

or

·          A visual presentation (presentation file, poster).

Designing the assessment task

Teachers should design an assessment task that allows the student to:

·          develop a solution (and output) in response to a design brief, which contains details of a problem with the presentation of information for a specific audience

·          apply all of the stages of a problem-solving methodology, except documentation, to create a solution (and output) that meets a specific need

·          apply appropriate software capabilities of the selected software published annually in the VCE Bulletin

·          use the software tool selected to demonstrate Outcome 1. This can be used in conjunction with another software tool

·          explain how the solution and output meets the organisational goals and information needs (for a specific audience)

·          have the opportunity to demonstrate the highest level of performance.

Resources and scheduling

Schools may determine the conditions for the task including access to resources and notes. Students should be advised of the timeline and conditions under which the task is to be conducted.

Performance descriptors

The following descriptors provide a guide to the standards expected when setting and marking assessment tasks. They describe the knowledge and skills typically demonstrated by students who have achieved scores within each range on the assessment task/s.

Outcome 2

Solve an information problem, taking into account the goals and information needs of an organisation.

MARK RANGE

DESCRIPTOR: typical performance in each range

41–50 marks

Demonstrates a clear understanding of all aspects of the problem through a succinct and logical problem statement.

The input and output requirements are complete, are capable of solving the identified problem and take into the goals and information needs of the organisation. All constraints have been identified.

An appropriate and comprehensive range of design and production processes, techniques and equipment are efficiently and effectively applied.

The solution (and output) meets all of the information needs. All testing techniques are appropriate to the solution attributes being tested and have been effectively applied.

Procedures for solution development and file management are complete, logically sequenced and appropriate to the problem.

The justification of how the solution has met all of the information needs and goals of the organisation is fully supported by a set of complete and relevant criteria and the identification of relevant aspects of the solution (and output).

31–40 marks

Demonstrates an understanding of most of the aspects of the problem through a clear problem statement.

The input and output requirements are complete, with most being capable of solving the identified problem, and take into account the goals and information needs of the organisation. Most constraints have been identified.

An appropriate or comprehensive range of design and production processes, techniques and equipment are efficiently or effectively applied.

The solution (and output) meets most of the information needs. Most testing techniques are appropriate to the solution attributes being tested and have been applied.

Procedures for solution development and file management are generally appropriate to the problem and are consistently applied.

The justification is supported by a relevant but incomplete set of criteria and the identification of most of the relevant aspects of the solution (and output).

21–30 marks

Demonstrates an understanding of some of the aspects of the problem through the inclusion of a problem statement.

Most input and output requirements are identified; however, some are not capable of solving the identified problem. Some of the goals and information needs of the organisation have been considered. Some constraints have been identified.

A range of design and production processes, techniques and equipment are applied; however, opportunities exist for greater efficiency or effectiveness.

The solution (and output) meets some of the information needs of the organisation. Some testing techniques are appropriate to the solution attributes being tested.

Most procedures for solution development and/or file management procedures are appropriate to the problem; however, some are inconsistently applied.

The explanation of how the solution (and output) has met some of the information needs of the organisation is not fully supported. Some irrelevant criteria are provided and few references are made to specific aspects of the solution (and output).

11–20 marks

Demonstrates a limited understanding of the nature of the problem through the inclusion of a problem statement that contains some inaccuracies.

Some input and output requirements are identified. Few of the goals and information needs of the organisation have been considered. Limited constraints have been included.

Some design and production processes, techniques and equipment are applied.

The solution (and output) meets some of the information needs of the organisation; however, inaccuracies exist. A limited set of testing techniques have been applied with some solution attributes not tested.

Some procedures for solution development and file management procedures are appropriate to the problem; however, they are inconsistently applied.

An incomplete description is provided of how some aspects of the solution (and output) meet the information needs of the organisation. The description is based on limited and inappropriate criteria and no reference is made to specific aspects of the solution (and output).

1–10 marks

Demonstrates a misunderstanding of most aspects of the problem experienced by the organisation through the inclusion of a problem statement that is not clearly connected to the problem description.

Incomplete input and output requirements are identified. Few of the goals or information needs of the organisation have been considered. No constraints have been included.

Limited design and production processes, techniques and equipment are applied.

The solution (and output) meets few of the information needs of the organisation. Minimal testing techniques have been applied, and are generally inappropriate for the solution attributes being tested.

Limited procedures for solution development and file management are applied.

A limited and sometimes inaccurate description is provided of how some aspects of the solution (and output) meet the information needs of the organisation. No criteria are provided.
