Claude, your response and 'heads up' is great info. I also appreciate your insight on size of output items and time to print.
I didn't know Bunnings sold these printers but not surprised about that all the same.
Perhaps I could drop into your school for a look at your setup and a chat in term 2? Im taking term 2 off for a break and will likely be in Melbourne on occasion so would like to set up a trip to visit some schools and see who's doing what...and how well. Call it 'travelling PD' if ya like.
cheers.
Kent.

Hi All

I bought a 3D printer end of last year (entry level model) The UP2 printer from 3D printing systems.

I teach Multimedia. I want to build a very small unit that will get the kids building a little toy or something along those lines.

What you need to work out is that 3D printers are being sold at many places...such as Bunnings etc. 3D printers are already becoming mainstream so they will only get better and cheaper the longer you wait,. However, as we know the longer you wait, the further behind we get with technology. Just be careful as to how good the printer is.

3 things to look out for.
1. The type of filament you want to use (different types of resins)
2. what file type you can export to (not all printers print to standard formats)...i went for the .STL file type.
3. Trial and error . Ive printed a lot of trial models downloaded off the internet, a lot of them dont work properly due to buckling and splitting. So pay attention to heating the plate and keep the aircon in the way of the printer. GET TO KNOW YOUR PRINTER!

What you need to know is that even a small object..say, 6x6cm can take around 90 mins to print depending on the complexity level. The smaller the object, the details just get lost and don't appear well.

I am teaching this at the year 10 level as a trial and hope to take it down to year 9 next year depending how it goes. I teach IDM: Cert 3 in media and using the AIE as my RTO so we are learning Autodesk MAYA.

I will be teaching the year 10s very basic MAYA. Exporting the file and hopefully get the students printing over the term as it prints very slow.

As to how it fits into curriculum, I've yet to check Vic AusVels how it can fit in.....but hey.....there will be a spot somewhere I'm sure.
3D is now a valuable skill in the multimedia industry.

I know it's a lot of info, but I'm only learning as I go.

I too am interested in this 3D printing in the classroom environment.
Aldi had a printer on sale recently at approx $500....(which I didnt purchase incidentally, but just mentioned it...).

I am taking a look during this year at the 3D printing concept as an option to put it to our leadership for development for 2017 to integrate it into various curriculum studies.

Additionally, it would be a great PD opportunity for me to come do a quick tour of 2 or 3 Melbourne or regional schools or workplaces that use this tech to develop this further plus perhaps discuss how you have integrated this into your curriculum areas effectively.

Any feedback or schools who could offer me a tour/demo would be appreciated. My target would be levels 7-10 kids and perhaps this could spark a VCE interest too???

cheers,
KB.

OK this one may sound silly, but last year I visited a school that 3D printed rocks.

Well, to be more precise they used 3D printer files of stone tools from some museum in the US to print exact copies of these quite rare and culturally significant stone tools

These tools were from some stone-age civilisation and the History class basically had kids hold them and orient them in their hand until "oh...look.. this one fits my hand and makes a flat surface that you could mash wheat with" or "hey, this one fits into my hand and provides a sharp point for cutting meat" etc

The irony of using C21 technology to print prehistoric technology was not lost on most students.

Hi all,
My name is Damien Cameron. I am using Google Sketchup with a STL export addin to create 3D printable products with students.
I have a CELL Robox printer and started with this last year.
I have two other Kit built printers but the resolution and software is not as easy to use (but not hard) for about 18 months.

Using Sketchup adding dimensions as you go it's a great starting point to get students to create a Mobile Phone holder. A simple L-bracket that can be personalised!
Things to discuss: Designs, waste, useability etc. Once students see a 3D design get manufactured they start asking some really good questions.
You can also get into the advantage and disadvantage ie Bridging material clean up etc.

Happy to discuss further. I have even done this with Grade 5/6.
2 issues. Expense and time to print. A competition for best male and female design works.
Happy to discuss further with anyone & send files, tutorials, and links. I'm sure there are many more clever people doing cool things but happy to help for those interested.
Please email off topic.
