Hi all,

I would highly recommend Blender (blender.org). It is completely free and
has a wealth of resources out there. blender nation, blender artists,
blender cookie, blender guru are good places to start.
I have just finished trialling it as a replacement for 3DS Max in our Year
10 3D Animation course. Where it matched the capabilities of 3DS Max, and
students were able to take it home as it runs on Windows, Mac & Linux. But
more importantly, I have notices a higher level of engagement from my
students, even when I was unable to leave work due to illness (I received
feedback from other teachers about this)
Recently I found out, via the blender-education list, that the software has
successfully worked with grade 4s. So year 8s should not have too much
difficulty with it. It really depends on what you wish to achieve in the
classroom.

Cheers,
