[Yr7-10it] RE: Yr7-10it Digest, Vol 56, Issue 29

We have purchased 3 of each type of Netbook on the list to try them out. Our Techies are creating an image for them at the moment so I can't give much detail about their pro's and con's or any difficulty with certain software, but shall keep people informed as the trial develops.
At the moment it looks like we may phase them in at year 9 next year. We have a 2020 program where a quarter of our yr 9 students (78 kids) participate in a special 4 week program. As each house group starts the program, spread out over term 2-4, our current thinking is to provide them with a netbook for them to take home and keep. This would mean the issuing of 4 lots of 78 rather than one huge group of 312. A repeat of the procedure the following year as we try to reach the 1:1 9-12 ratio.
Issues of what happens when they reach yr12 with a 4 year old machine, and of course most warranties/insurance cover 3 yrs?

NSW is going netbooks (Lenovo) for every teacher and yr 9-12 student with their DER funding : interesting to see how that goes

personally i'd think netbooks might be better suited to primary & early secondary like the Vic trials

don't think the cost difference to a more powerful laptop is that much- i'd prefer to use something with higher specs and i think many senior students might as well - we'll see how it goes i guess

don't know about the video card issues; but i do performance becomes an issue on them using flash if trying anything too ambitious

cheers

rob

Thanks Kevork for starting the discussion. We are also looking at it but
having a great range of discussion as to what year level we give too. We
can only fund one year level. Some have said that Year 10 would be
better, I argue that year 7 because they may have been exposed to them
in primary school. (Primary schools in our region were given netbooks
for year 5s and some of the small schools bought them for year 6 also).

I have heard that the insurance is quite expensive.

Any input for other would be helpful. LWT suggested that you ensure you
get one with a hard case.

Hi Folks,

Sorry for the cross posts.

We are at an important crossroad/milestone in our school regarding
Netbooks/Laptops/Notebooks for Year 7 next year.

We are committed to introducing new Netbooks/Laptops/Notebooks in 2010
which students keep, take home, are responsible for and need to manage.
I know it sounds like horse before cart but we are determined to make it
work.

We are keen hear from any other school expecially regarding any
pitfalls, issues, preferred choices for brands, reliability, service,
software and hardware, application installations, warranties etc etc.

I would say feel free to email me off list but I am sure others would
like to hear about these experiences for their own research also.

As usual if none of this interests a subscriber there is the delete
button.

With thanks
