I have been suggesting, for a couple of years, on and off, that we should
be should be thinking in terms of "essential concepts" rather than
essential skills. See http://pdchandler.wikispaces.com/

If I had my druthers, I'd be building into a year 7 course a unit on the
'big concepts' of logging in (see
http://pdchandler.wikispaces.com/Logging+In as a starter). This would be
several weeks long, possibly as long as term. There's lots of important
skills and concepts under this umbrella, which reach into students
out-of-school lives, including aspects of internet safety.

Given my current role, I'd also be vying for a good chunk of visual
literacy; it might look like a unit on powerpoint, but it'd actually be a
unit on visual literacy.
