Unfortunately, most of the claims made at launch were, to be polite, premature. The studios apparently hadn't actually signed up for the deal that Qtrax claimed to have in place. Now, 6 months later, downloads are starting to happen - if you are in the US. If you are outside the US, all you get is a pretty version of the Songbird media browser. How long until we get downloads like this is anybody's guess, however I expect that a lot of the content will remain US only for the foreseeable future.

Hi all,

Regarding Qtrax: http://www.qtrax.com/ and http://www.qtrax.com/AU/

"Qtrax is the world's first free and legal peer-to-peer (P2P) digital
music site. Music lovers can discover new music and legally download full
length, high-quality versions of their favorite songs while compensating
both the artists and the record labels through non-intrusive and relevant
advertising. Qtrax has the unparalleled support of the major record labels
and all of their respective publishing divisions."

Media Report:
"Free legal downloads promised by Universal rights deal" The Times Online

"Universal Music has signed a rights deal with a new music store that
promises the first legal free file-sharing service .. The New York-based
Qtrax flew in stars including LL Cool J and James Blunt to support it at a
£500,000 launch in Cannes in January, celebrating its promise to offer 25
million tracks free to download and share. Record companies, it said,
would be compensated through advertising revenue on the site and royalty
payments would be linked to track downloads."
