[Yr7-10it] remote desktop, another alternative

I use a product called Networx Manager, works great on the LAN, is PC based(and mac too I think) and can do all the stuff that the Mac one does!  I love it, the kids get annoyed by it with messages or screens locked etc. can lock internet off too, remotely can overide a students machine and 'steal' their mouse..(they initially think their mouse is having a psycho!). Its a handy tool, and can be a bit of fun too, if not abused, and you 'pick your mark' carefully. Its not breaching privacy, its monitoring appropriate school equipment usage and 'encouraging' them where necessary!  I particularly enjoy taking over their 'doom' or similar game and using up all their ammo...it drives em nuts till they work out I am in control...then we both usually just smile and have a laugh about it.
Oh, you are presented with a constantly refreshing list of all programs currently active, but beware, you will need to set a policy on the server to disable the student 'ctrl alt del' key combo to prevent access to task manager, as they can kill the 'manager' task and then you wont see them on the logical list of machines(which go by username). Hope this helps. I get around this by freezing all machines and simply get up and walk around the room, if they are still active, they have disabled my manager, and are made aware of the 'problem' . They must then reset the machine and log on again to continue!

Sorry Rob,

I was talking about Apple Remote Desktop which is very different from the PC version.  Apple RD allows you to observe (one or all machines at once), control, send messages, lock machines ( great when you want 2-3 minutes to explain something with everyone paying attention) as well as shutdown, send unix commands, manage apps etc.

It's also good for showing student screens on the data projector when you want to show best practice responses.

It works on networked laptops - great for techs dealing with teachers in different parts of the school.

Xavier's middle schools use the Mac platform while the Senior Campus has a one to one laptop program that is predominantly PC machines.  Next year, some of the students in Yr 9 (entry point for the Senior Campus and laptops) will be using dual booting MacBooks.  That is, using a relatively new app (either Parallels Desktop or Boot Camp), their MacBook runs Windows.

Does Remote Desktop work ok for monitoring screens on the LAN?

I have used remote desktop for other things but normally for server
access or peer to peer internet access

Just had a yr 7 class and found myself wondering about that - viewing
kids screens on mine

I know there used to be some relatively expensive / clunky products that
did this - be nice if Remote Desktop was ok for that job

Can the kids use it to see other screens? - can you configure it to just
be able to see theirs ?

Many thanks to everyone who replied to this, I'm grateful for the
response.  It still didn't clarify what we should do but it did show the
diversity of opinions!  At this stage, we are going ahead with 2
octagonal tables and swivel chairs of some sort.  The octagonal shape
will mean less direct view on student machines but using Remote Desktop,
teachers can easily view all machines on their desktop and the data
projector and maybe a couple of mirrors on the wall....

Fingers crossed our measurements are A1.
