Lorette,
We have used Markbook for about 8 years now. We are happy with it
although admin is high in terms of setting up classes, maintaining
accurate class lists, etc. It works with either an Access or SQL
database (which we now use) and we import student details from
FirstClass (also now SQL). Staff have a client on their machine to write
student reports. Each staff member is able to develop their own comment
database. Update of files is down using TCP/IP.
The program allows for interim reports and full semester reports. It can
handle multiple template layouts and there is a comprehensive report
module to pull out summary of results for coordinators and other VIPs.
I believe Markbook are also developing a browser based version.
Bruce

Our school is considering alternatives to Filemaker as a reporting
system. Does anyone have a suggestion for a better alternative? What do
people think of Markbook?

Sounds like a good port of Open Office to run on a Mac. Only review that

I read suggested that if you can use an X11 application, then use the
Mac OS X release of OpenOffice.org
