Many of us live in the metropolitan area of Melbourne and some of us even live reasonably close to an airport. Airfares to Gold Coast and back on 8th September are currently just over $200 and the event is free. Cheaper than going to the VITTA conference for a day!!

Hi all (apologies for cross-posting)

I received the following info from Andrew Parsons at Microsoft concerning a training day especially for educators that he has organised – details are below:

Tech.Ed Academic Day is a no-cost dedicated day of content designed to be relevant to IT educators. The day brings Microsoft “thought provokers” and respected university lecturers together to discuss current topics such as social and new media, and offers the chance to network with fellow educators. Topics include:

· Game development in the classroom
· The impact of social media on students, both in the classroom and without
· Open Source and Microsoft
· The future of the Web

When Andrew ran the technical training days earlier this year, he received feedback from teachers asking about topics that were more general technology areas as well as for more technical training, and while he is planning on another series of free training days later on for specific technologies, Academic Day is designed to provide free academic discussions and presentations on general technology areas.

For those interested, Andrew will also talk about programs teachers can use to excite their students about technology such as Imagine Cup, the world’s biggest technology competition for students aimed at generating socially responsible technology-based solutions to the world’s toughest problems, DreamSpark for free software, Faculty Connection for a wealth of resources for use in your own curriculum stream, etc, but the main focus is the topic areas mentioned above.

Tech.Ed Academic Day is free to attend – simply register your intent to attend at the website below. If you have any queries, please shoot them through to me and I can pass them on to Andrew.

For more info on the agenda, or to register:
http://www.microsoft.com.au/events/register/home.aspx?levent=347949&linvitation

This day was originally designed as part of the Tech.Ed developer conference I posted about a couple of months ago, but because Tech.Ed sold out, Andrew has been able to open it up for educators who want to attend just for the single day.

Cheers,
Adrian Janson
VITTA President
