The exam is proof read by ESL vetters and by study specialist people and by industry representatives (whoever they are)<BR>
Then it is actually “sat” by someone as an exam – usually in June or July. The panel then meets again and looks over all of this feedback and makes changes as appropriate.<BR>
I have not been a part of this process so I can comment about it – I investigated years ago when I felt that I could contribute to it...<BR>

I have in the past, in other subjects, argued with the exam setters and vetters and been given some feedback about the process.<BR>
<BR>
My conclusion is that it is absolutely IMPERATIVE that the people who write the exam participate in marking the exam. (caps are deliberate)<BR>
<BR>
Having written exams at Uni level for years I found it strangely disconnected to not be allowed to mark the papers – it was difficult to be responsive in the next year’s paper to the issues that arose each year.<BR>

I did not teach the 3,4 this year<BR>

The brainstorming question is not subjective - one of the basic tenets of brainstorming is that all contributions, no matter how silly, should be written down without criticism.<BR>

The defamation topic was there in the sample questions - PixelEd didn't cover it in the Practice exam, but in our defence it was stressed as a possible area for a question in the student exam revision online seminar we ran on Elluminate, and discussed at length in our teacher Elluminate session on the sample exam.<BR>
<BR>
Don't forget that the exam results will be standardised, and although it's unlikely that there is a student out there who will get everything correct, the student with the highest mark will be given a perfect score for the exam due to the way the bell-curve works. All of our students are pretty much in the same boat, though it is demoralising for them to feel they didn't get a chance to really show what they knew.<BR>

It seems to me that the people who wrote the exam had a brief to avoid the same old predictable topics, but that didn't give them permission to construct poorly written, ambiguous questions and then not proof them! Perhaps the services of an English teacher could be utilised next time?<BR>

I think there is universally agreement that some of the theoretical questions in the IDM exam appear obtuse and difficult to comprehend how they relate to the competencies that we are delivering.<BR>
<BR>
I understand VCAA has to set an exam that will challenge even our best students but there is no possibility of achieving a perfect score in this exam and has to be considered as unfair and inequitable.<BR>
<BR>
I would encourage teachers to use the exam feedback survey to provide well thought out responses that point out the obscure and irrelevant nature of some questions.<BR>
<BR>
Please don't feel personally responsible for the unreasonable questions in the exam, we can only use the information at our disposal to help our students, beyond that it has to be VCAA's responsibility.<BR>

Does anybody know if the people who set the exam do time trials to evaluate the feasibility of completing the exam within the two hour time frame?<BR>
Because, I found the amount of time to complete the practical section far outweighed the mark allocation. It is not because it was too hard, but it was time consuming getting all the elements to work together. Or is it just me who is too slow!<BR>
