Hi Claire,

I love typography and have collected a few resources over the years:

  * This is a great intro to the history of typography. It beautifully created with stop-motion, informative, and a short 5 minutes long. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOgIkxAfJsk
  * http://fortheloveoftype.blogspot.com.au/ is a brilliant blog focused on typography by the up-and-coming young designer Gemmo O'Brien.
  * I Wonder by Marian Bantjes is a beautiful book to show students with amazing patterns and typography. http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/I-Wonder-Marian-Bantjes/9780500515297?utm_source=SV-Body&utm_medium=email-Service&utm_term=I-Wonder_title&utm_content=order-details&utm_campaign=Order-dispatch Her website contains some beautiful work, too: http://www.bantjes.com/ The typography and patterns made out of pasta are particularly spectacular! You can also hear her speak on Ted Talks: http://www.ted.com/talks/marian_bantjes_intricate_beauty_by_design.html (Can you tell I really love her work?)
  * Finally, I show my students the work of Autobahn: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4o6g74gK01r8fuev.jpg and http://www.behance.net/Autobahn Then I challenge them to create their own font from unusual materials.

Hope these help people!

Michelle Dennis

Subject: [vet-mm] Typography Tips?

Dear VET IDM teachers,
I struggle with getting kids (at both yr. 11 and 12) to think creatively about this aspect of design.
Has anyone got any inspiring tips, resources, class exercises, activities to get kids thinking about typographical design?
Cheers
Claire
