I mentioned that when I am explaining codecs, I talk about old fashioned
film, and how teachers used to need to get their projector licence and lug
in a huge machine and watch in horror when things stuffed up and a spaghetti
of mess unravelled as the film spewed onto the ground-anyone else remember
those days?...the YouTube generation has no idea how lucky they are!

I found these figures on the web somewhere and I bring in a reel of film to
physically represent how much data there is in a video file. At 24 or 25
frames per second a 10 minute movie shot on 16mm film would be around 115
metres long. A 3 hour movie required around 2 Km of film. Compare this with
a DVD.
