In this case, though you would want to change the line on the button
from:
_root.myname=_root.myname1.text;

To:

_root.myname = _root.myname.text + ", hello there!";

So that it wasn't just the name, it was the greeting originally
requested.

(If intending to use the name multiple times, it would make sense to
store the name in one variable and then the greetings in other ones.)

Here a file from a VITTA PD session CD made by Mark Ridgeway. He made a
neat collection of basic actionscript files which is rather handy if you
can get hold of them.
