Hi Alan,

Check out moodle http://moodle.org
its opensource, well supported and highly recommended with lots of 3rd party addins.


Also check out the eLearning section of http://www.opensourcecms.com for demo sites and
reviews, advice on moodle and several other possibilities.

There is also a local  moodle mailling list  moodle at edulists.com.au that might be worth
checking out for support and advice.
