[vet-mm] Examiners Report 06

Good point John,

Though I think more detail needs to be gained before laying responsibility.

What needs to be changed, the exam or Cert III.
That is the basis of my last list entry..

If it is only the exam, and it does not have to be Cert III compliant, then
pursue the VCAA.

If it is the Cert III, then you are chasing a red herring, the VCAA only
abide by it as do all stakeholders, including examiners...

If the Cert. III is aimed too high for VET, then I think the VCAA will have
little power to change it.

Yes giving feedback, sharing knowledge etc is a must a more people should
join in.... PixelEd, the list, etc have done a fantastic job in supporting
the VET MM Community as a whole.

My comment about wasting time was not directed at the list or PixelEd or the
discussions concerning the exam, my apologies if it seems so,.... it focuses
on the above issue only, as it seems to be an issue that is stopping any
further progress.

My previous queries, I still think, need to be answered before knowing where
the solution lies..... Given the ongoing comments that the VCAA can, if it
chose to, alter the scripting component of the exam.... does any one know if
they have the power to do so....has anyone formally asked?....is the VCAA
bound like all other stakeholders in the Cert III, to strictly abide by the
competencies as is, even to the extent to be an audit issue, controlled by
government regulations?.

I know that letters have been sent re exam discussions, but I am not sure
whether they have put these queries directly and corresponding answers
given.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree???

Regards

Paul Conway

Paul, as mentioned in the VCE VET Multimedia Program booklet, to be
eligible for a study score, amongst other things, students "must
undertake an examination in the November examination period, based on
the underpinning knowledge and skills in the units of competence advised
by the VCAA."

Clearly, the exam is driven by the VCAA. Is it so unreasonable that
teachers provide feedback to the authority on the quality of the
examination questions?

We need more teachers contributing to the discussion not less.

Regards
John

Given the ongoing comments that the VCAA can, if it chose to, alter the
scripting component of the exam so to take into account that ' the
questions
are pitched too high for year 12 students.'.... does any one know if
they
have the power to do so....has anyone formally asked?....is the VCAA
bound
like all other stakeholders in the Cert III, to strictly abide by the
competencies as is, even to the extent to be an audit issue, controlled
by
government regulations?...

If the exam is not directly a product of the Cert III, then you are
correct
in pursing the VCAA, but if it is, then you probably have been wasting a
lot
of time in trying to make them change what they can't change.

Spot on Sue. As mentioned last year, not even the old Systems course
required scripting responses that the Multimedia exam wanted. VCAA must
be
more prescriptive as to the degree to which scripting is taught for
their
purposes.

John

Its not surprising that scripting is still a grey area. Like I've said
many times, the questions are pitched too high for year 12 students. If
scripting questions are to be included then VCAA need to consider that
their TAFE training package cannot be delivered to the depth required on
a year 12 exam. You'd think they'd have understood this by now.

Hi folks,

Report has just been posted

ltim
edia_assessrep_06.pdf

Just a quick look-it seems we still aren't teaching scripting very well,

although write content and copy is improving!!
Love to hear people's comments!
