[vet-mm] ICT - VELS

Hi Folks,

  I am feeling that anyone not on the VET-MM list will miss all this valuable discussion regarding VELS.
 I have made a list specifically for VELS at www.edulists.com.au and would hope it will get some use. Perhaps we can encourage the thread to continue on that list otherwise there will be valuable information many people will not receive.

We have tried to argue our case at our school by making a comparison with English. English is also used across every subject but it still needs to be taught properly by experts in the field. Our other strong argument is that whilst most students will need only a familiarity with ICT in their domestic and working lives, others will be seeking a career in it and must be taught the basics from an early enough age to be able to specialise in it at senoir school. We seem to have made some progress but it is an ongoing battle.

It's interesting though that the ICT/MM is still being taught by an expert - a highly trained one at that!
My main worry with VELS and abolishing ICT as a separate discipline is that it won't be taught properly (in some cases not at all) and our subject will seriously suffer at the senior levels. Not to mention kids who miss out on such important skills.
I could relate a dozen examples of supposably ICT-savvy colleagues who don't know the first thing about basics like managing files etc etc. I recently showed someone, who I would class as a more ICT literate staff member, how to sort their email by date or sender and they were blown away!!!!!!
