[vet-mm] ICT - VELS

God, how I would love to teach primary! Sounds like a great approach and
a lot of fun. Our difficulty is the huge variation in teachers' skill
level and interest in integrating IT into their classes. We are working
on it, but I don't think we are quite there yet...

The reporting aspect will be an issue also.

Thanks for your reply and have fun (you lucky thing).

Cheers,

Hey Jacqui,

I'm teaching Multimedia in a primary school this year as a separate
subject.
The way I run it so it is integrated is that every topic I teach has the
subject matter based on what they are doing in class. Ie. Stop
animation project with dinosaurs as the theme because they have been
doing dinosaurs in class. Reporting then on that domain is my job. The
classroom teachers don't report on it at all.

Hi Jacquie,
I don't think you are alone in this one.
It has been debated on other lists as well (IPM, Year7-10 IT to name 2
of the edulists) Don't have details here but Kevork may be able to point
you to the appropriate archived thread.

One very potent argument is that schools will have to report on ICT
domain so if you have ICT as a separate subject you have no
problems/issues or confusion assessing and then reporting on it.
I think schools are going to have enough hassles assessing and reporting
on Communication, Thinking, Interpersonal Development, Personal Learning
etc without throwing another one into the mix.
Of course, ICT should be used across the curriculum, but removing ICT as
a distinct identity is not the only way to do it.
We have ICT as a distinct subject but the iCT teacher also takes the
class for another subject such as Maths, English, SOSE or Science and
they integrate the ICT skills through their subject eg look at the
basics of spreadsheets and use these skills in some aspect of their core
class. It seems to work for us.
Claire :-)
PS I hope noone minds an off-topic discussion, because ultimately how
schools cover the basic skills 7-10 will affect the calibre (and number)
of students we get in VCE.
