Hi Folks,

  As always , I can 't help but feel I should at least let subscribers know that as Administrator/moderator I am here and following this and other threads with much interest.
 

   Many of us feel strongly about this discussion in one or other direction - namely hard limits for some ( no "infomercials " ) and and others have softer limits on this issue ( limited infomercials ),

  All information that has the purpose of "informing , questioning and clarifying"  is welcome as long as it is relevant to what we do in the classroom, in schools , in our PD and the courses we teach and LEARN in order to teach.  

  I would be worried if we got a stream of announcements from one source, about one or other product. 
 But,  as educators we need to be up to date with what is happening . Surely, we are professional enough to make our own decisions with support from our colleagues. 
  
  This list is open to all teachers, students, educators, lecturers, industry representatives as well as any others interested in advancing the knowledge and resources we have access to for the best possible outcomes for our students and the professional growth and development of teachers seeking those goals.

  We can take it or leave it. We don't want blatant advertising or a message that starts off with " ... here is something for your classroom teaching and by the way we also offer the following 39 other services , please ring , email so I can run through them for you ". The latter is canvassing for business which is not the purpose of these lists.
 

   Here are examples of infomercials that are , in my view , suitable for the lists :

   1. TAFE XYZ is running a course on a software product known to be used by teachers on a list. The cost, time and other details are circulated. Take it or leave it.
   2. Company ZYX, ABN 1233213213, ACN 23413243214 is running a course for flash, director, actionscript etc etc at location X , at a cost Y and there are specials for groups and subject associations. Take it or leave it.
   3. Company YZX has books for sale relevant to some or other course relevant to the list. Details , prices, specials supplied. Take it or leave it.

  I would be concerned if there were repetitions of these infomercials, yet I do want people to seek out these suppliers if it suits their needs ( that means reminders can be sent if requested ) . 
I would be equally concerned if we just never saw some information because it was a commercial organisation supplying the service. Have we not had ample precedence of companies providing PDs ? 
What I would not like is a block or obstacle to obtaining information because of a narrow definition of the role of these lists eg. only teachers talking to teachers ( or even worse , only current teachers of the subject allowed to post to the list ??). 
How does that align with the spirit of VET which is workplace training and readiness which has a work experience component and is to prepare for industry and the workplace ?? 
  
   Finally these lists have to work for the majority if they are to survive. The views above are mine as I have wished the lists to develop and grow. No one "owns" these lists -- we are all stakeholders --  and I hope these thoughts align with the majority.

I tend to think that the list should not be a service for advertising products directly....

Sure list members can tout them but I don't see the point in letting direct advertising by companies that are only adding to the list for commercial gain.

This can be a fine point to argue and as such I take the view all or none, either let it in or don't. Who is to decide 'limited' ???

I'm already bombarded with enough "limited" infomercials already.

I joined the list to discussed issues with my peers only and not to receive "limited" infomercials.

Lastly, as this is the "VET Multimedia Teachers' Mailing List"',  I would take it is up to the association's leadership to make a ruling and that Kevork's own opinion in this matter (be it by a third party) is not relevant.

I see vendors as an integral part of the education community.  
 
Information pertaining to "new" services should not be shunned but welcomed in this "open, public" forum. 
 
As Ivy stated in her email, Tootega  "*was established to provide assistance to schools" and "Our organization has been formed to specifically assist teachers across all KLAs."
 
I can't see anything wrong with that.

I'm not the advertising police of our Multimedia Teacher's mailing list but I'd like to express my dislike of advertising through the list.  The list is not for this purpose which is explained to every user when they sign up.  If you wish to advertise to Multimedia Teachers then you need to mail to schools directly, or put advertisments in our association, PixelEd's newsletter or put up a display at functions.
 
I was very concerned about your stated intentions to continue to advertise through the list.  If you ever put another email on the list for advertising purposes I shall ask the web master of the lists to remove your access.
