I’d like to share with you some of the information and statistics that we learned at the event. Design was defined as “A human-centered problem solving process” and that Designers “translate needs into tangible products, services, environments and experiences”. As our learning area can often suffer from some poor perception issues it is always useful to have definitions that capture the range and context of our activities.<br>
<br>
In Victoria the design industry is very strong. More than 75,000 people are employed as designers here and Victoria is home to more than 4,000 design consultancies, most of which are energetic small businesses employing less than five people. Design consultancies contribute more than AU$4.8 billion to Victoria's economy and the total employment associated with design in Victoria is estimated to be about 200,000.<br>

In order to ensure that rural and regional teachers have better access to professional learning, we hope to run a new program next year called </span><strong style="font-size:14px"><em>Skill Sharing</em></strong><span style="font-size:14px">. We are looking for educators to register with us if they have a workshop they are willing to run in their local area.</span><br>

<span style="font-size:14px">DATTA Vic will publish the list of these workshops, and schools can register for sessions in their local area. All <em>Skill Sharing </em>participants will receive a certificate of participation.</span><br>

<span style="font-size:14px">There will be a nominal charge for participants, and presenters will be paid. We can also cover certain materials costs.</span><br>

RoboCup Junior has been running now for 16 years and in the past year the entry level has close to doubled! This year, the RoboCup Junior State finals hosted 500 students in close to 200 teams from 42 schools competing in <em>Robot Soccer</em>, <em>Rescue</em> and <em>Dance</em>. </span><br>

<strong><font color="#000080"><span style="font-size:22px">In Memoriam - Sally Johnson</span></font></strong><br>
<br>
<span style="font-size:13px">The teaching community is mourning the passing of Sally Johnson. Sally made a difference to people. She went through the B Ed. Art and Craft course at Melbourne State College and majored in Wood.<br>
<br>
She was at MLC for 25 years and taught Product Design - wood. She was a positive role model to the girls at MLC and they always aimed high as a result. On a number of occasions her students were in Top Designs. In 2014 Top Designs one of her students made an amazing skirt out of wood as well as a clutch purse and a necklace. Sally was always an innovative creative thinker who would have said to her students "Sure, let's have a go at that"<br>
<br>
Sally was the assistant Chief Assessor and was so supportive and understanding during exam marking when the inevitable happened and the marker was out of range. Ringing Sally up wasn't traumatising.<br>
<br>
She died as a result of a brain tumour which is a little known cancer that robs us of so many brilliant people.<br>
